Mr Michael Palmer (Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC) was worried that the pay increases for ministers and top civil servants had undermined support for Workfare and GST offset packages. "I don't think we have been sensitive to the feelings of many people. Many people have asked me: Did we increase GST to pay for this increase in salaries? While that is clearly not the case, it is most unfortunate that a support package so carefully crafted in good faith to help our lower income families should be seen as such light," he said.Michael Palmer raised a good point: Why on earth would people see this pay rise as anything else but being funded by the corresponding rise in GST and other price hikes? Why indeed? How else would one see this potential quicksand? Why wouldn’t the obvious inference be made? Wasn’t the budget plan and other packaged offsets little more than a smokescreen to hide the real issue – a big fat raise for already fattened ministers?

Dear BillyBong. I do not think that is admirable. I think that is from the mounting pressure that the public is giving. And it shows one thing to ALL OF YOU here. That, public pressure still works, so don't give up.Originally posted by BillyBong:That PM Lee is willing to donate all of his additional earnings to charity is admirable. Few ministers and MPs are likely to follow suit, especially since he has made it clear that what the others do with their money is completely up to them.

If he does not do it, the public will become more and more incited, and the pressure will mount. So I don't see it as being noble.
That said, he is smart to make this move. At least substantial numbers in the public will be quelled.[/b]

Then again, some Singaporeans are sheep with the shortest of memories.

SINGAPORE: Dr Lily Neo has said she will donate the increment in her MP allowance to Public Assistance recipients in her constituency.one more fella who wanna donate...
Her announcement came after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he was donating his salary increase to suitable good causes.
However the MP for Jalan Besar GRC said she was concerned her constituents might still not appreciate her reasons for supporting the Prime Minister's decision to raise public sector pay.
The MP, who did not speak earlier during the parliamentary debate on the issue, acknowledged that Singapore must maintain its prosperity.
And if Singapore should falter because of incompetent leadership and wrong policies, she said, poor Singaporeans would suffer for it.
Responding to Dr Neo, PM Lee said this is a message that has to be presented not just by him and the ministers but by all MPs and grassroots leaders.
As for MP for West Coast GRC Ho Geok Choo, she said she respects Mr Lee's gesture in donating his pay increase.
However she cautioned there might be others who may take his gesture as a face-saving admission that the policy is flawed.
It is important to emphasise that what the Prime Minister has done was out of care and concern for Singaporeans, said MP Ho
