The High Court convicted and sentenced Chijioke Stephen Obioha on Tuesday after a 21-day trial held last year, it said.
Under Singapore’s tough anti-drug laws, the death penalty is mandatory for anyone caught trafficking more than 15 grams of heroin, 30 grams of cocaine or 500 grams of cannabis.
The death penalty is carried out by hanging.
Narcotics officers arrested Obioha in April 2007 following a surveillance operation. He had come to Singapore in 2005 to try out for a football club, the report said.
He was not hired but remained in the city-state working as a middle man for electronics goods dealers. His immigration pass expired in January 2007.
Human rights groups have strongly urged Singapore to abolish the death penalty, but the government maintains that it plays a key role in keeping crime down and is a strong deterrent to organised crime gangs.
In December 2004 Singapore hanged a 25-year-old Australian drug runner Nguyen Tuong Van, despite appeals for clemency by then Prime Minister John Howard.
Two convicted African drug traffickers were put to death in 2007 after their appeals for clemency were turned down and despite protests from the United Nations and rights activists. Its only marijuana man!!!!!! Not herion or some other harsh chemical junk that farks up your body and not forgetting he is only 20yr old.
sure, human rights group can appeal. prime minister of australia can appeal. even president of USA appeal with regards to micheal fay caning case.
But if Singapore respond to any of this appeal without good reason, than Singapore will just be another push over. The message is clear. don't do drugs here.
the age is the 点 here mah?
No.
But he is just 20 years old.
Still have a long way to go.
The problem is that hanging the courier is ineffective in limiting drug supply; There is an endless number of stupid, ignorant or desperate people willing to courier drugs. The way to prevent drug trafficking is to bring the masterminds to justice or to stop demand. Taking the life of the courier will have zero net effect on the drug market. It's disingenuous.
A couple of other thoughts. Mandatory sentencing can not serve justice as all mitigating factors are ignored. What is the point of having judges who can not decide on sentencing?
Last thought, state-sanctioned death penalty is still murder. 'Should have known better' in no way justifies taking somebody's life. This is barbarism in a so-called first world country. What a joke.
20yr old know how to do this type of thing

so... if the death penalty is removed, the drug supply will remain the same?
you are right in the sense that getting to the root of the problem is to get the mastermind. but that is kind of hard. the other way is to make sure that everybody is damn scared to work for the mastermind, ain't it?
keeping scums in prison and waste taxpayer's money... just let them die.
maybe you will prefer a first world country like america who is more humane. like their invasion of another country, torturing of prisoner of war...
or like britain, who have too many convicts in jail, and have to release them early to make more room repeatedly...
20 year old death penalty is too harsh in my opinion.
Still immature, easily misled, but end up dead as scapegoat.

Bring the masterminds to justice? Agree with that. Hang the masterminds after we have extracted information from the courier. Hang one courier, that's one courier less for the masterminds.
No mitigating factors need to be considered in drug trafficking. The crime is heinous enough to deserve death...period.
The laws of the land must reflect the customs and norms of the people. The majority of Singaporeans favour the retention of the death penalty...who are you to tell us how our nation should be governed? What a joke!

The US should launch a War on Drugs here to solve the solution. (CIA, do you see this? Bring in the drugs.)
Hint: A War on Terror produces more terror. A War on Drugs in the Americas produces more drugs. Get the idea?

I don't see Singapore failing in the war on illicit drugs. I don't see the USA having zero tolerance for illicit drugs like Singapore.
Hint: USA fail doesn't mean everybody else will fail.
I believe it would make no difference and that the personal risk to the users' lives and freedom is already an effective dampener on demand. There's just too much personal risk to even consider taking drugs in Singapore, for the vast majority of rational Singaporeans.
A fantastic first step would be stop supporting the masterminds: http://www.singapore-window.org/1020naus.htm . It's utterly pointless to hang misled 20 year-olds while doing high-level business with the source.
Who made you God? So you'd kill your child if your HDB flat was full? Does the US' war atrocities somehow justify Singapore's actions?

I was trying to bring the point across that the US, just like in the War of Terror, is doing the opposite of what it is supposed to be doing. Just like in the Vietnam War, the CIA ran drug routes out of the Golden Triangle to the US. Then in Afghanistan, when the Taliban came to power, they were able to destroy opium cultivation. However, when the US invaded, opium production resumed and Afghanistan is now the world's largest supplier of heroin ( with market share of about 90%). And who is the world's largest consumer of illegal drugs?
Funny...why should we as citizens of this country have no say in the way this country should be governed?
I can't say I don't sympathize with the kid. Everybody does stupid and wrong things at one point or another, especially when you are in desperate situation.
And the problem with the death penalty is that it cannot deter people who are already in desperate situations.

Singapore's blood money:
Hanging drug couriers but investing with their suppliers

If you have a kid, than you created life. who made you God to decide to bring a child to this world?
When there is law, people don't do harmful things to others, like smoking on the bus or MR to the scale of murder. the punishment varies from fine to imprisonment to death sentence. Who made you God to decide that death sentence is not justified?
Who made you God to decide that death sentence is not justified?
Then who said it is justified?

you do have a say. the law changes.
some time ago, all political films was banned. now they are not all banned. stuff changes.
funny will be to assume that everybody don't support the death penalty like you.
Why are you so sure that this kid is in a desperate situation? and why should we condone crime because he claim he was desperate? If he does something like sell his organs to solve his problem, I won't bother too much. He did no one any harm.
But drugs destroys lifes. And he should pay for supporting the drug trade.
