IJN Yamato :The largest battleship ever built in history

IJN Battleship "Yamato" and her sister ship "Musashi" was the heaviest, largest and possess the most powerful guns ever carried by a battleship in history of naval warfare.
She was designed to hunt down and "slaughter" any existing US Batteleships that ever comes into her arms. "Yamato" class battleships carries 9 460mm guns and 12 15.5mm secondary guns along with 24 25mm anti aircraft cannons.
Both ships was completed in 1941 and , were sunk in 1944 by American carrier aircrafts, proving the shortcoming and weakness of battleships to aircraft carriers, ending of an era of Battleship...

Well, when u consider that it was the Japanese who put naval aviation to use with devastating effectiveness @ pearl harbor, it just makes u wonder why didn they carry on developing better naval aircraft and tactics?

lol were there more ships but they got scrapped for metal instead cause it was unfeasible? and oh yea both took a lot of torpedo hits and damage before sinking ;o especially musashi

Perhaps its the idea of ego,i believe that in the past, battleships have an equal or more supreme status compared to aircraft carriers, thus its like today. Aircraft carriers are so strategic that many countries wanna own one for force projection, but have to consider the employment tactics and also the cost of running it. If nt end up like the Thais, no news of their aircraft carrier for so long.

The Japanese have made a movie about the heroic last moments 0f the Yamato crew before it is sunk. I saw this in another forum some time back, i think it should be released soon.

so whats the weakness of the battleship? is it the immobility or the inability to shoot down aircraft in the air?

I think e problem is not on Yamato itself but e lack of fighter cover, even a carrier can easily be sunk by aircrafts once bombers get past their fighter, c midway for example.

There were rumour tat 3 more were planned after Shinano & hull no. 111 which was scraped when only 30% completed, know only as hull no. 797 a standard Yamato class & no. 798 & 799 which was 2 be armed with 20.0in gun
