OKAY. LISTEN UP.
firstly, you should stop speaking (conversing) in mandarin.
[you speak mandarin, you don't speak chinese. You write in chinese but you don't write in mandarin.]
but i don't mean completely. i mean 80% of the time; you should speak english.
next, stop listening to those stupid chinese songs, which simply triggers unnecessary emotions.
and stop watching those silly taiwanese vairety shows and dumb chinese shows which ain't gonna improve your english. (their english is simply terrible)
one of the most IMPORTANT step is to READ more english books.
and yes, WATCH MORE english news. Go learn about political stuff.
if possible, look up in the ENGLISH DICTIONARY to discover new words.
p/s: DO NOT type like this: f.U.c.K eUu cHeEnaa-A*SeS! (together with the 'liao', 'lah', 'le', 'wor' etc, be it in sms-es or writing.
Not only does it piss people off, it simply shows how f*cked up your english is and how lowly-educated you are.
Oh. not to mention chinese-oriented fools such as ah bengs/ ah lians' poor standard of english.
take my advice and you're on your way to enjoying your stay in poly with your ENGLISH-SPEAKING (AKA POTATO, ENGLISH-ORIENTED) poly mates!

its only a month, be patient, just listen to more english news, it can be bbc or cna, as long as it's good asian english with no america slang, then it will help you to improve, if you come across some difficult words, take note and write it down in a note or something and find out what it means etc.Originally posted by forfun_cash:Actually they are my friend's friends. if you still aren't comfortable with speaking english, then read a story book aloud in your house to yourself, don't speak to the wall, its better to read from a book, at least you know if you have improve or not over the long term of practise. -
Honestly speaking, I find English people smarter than those 24-7 Mandarin speaker.
Ok, back to the topic. Are u speaking Mandarin at home? If so, try to cut down on the usage. Do u have siblings? He/She/They can help u to improve, articulate and converse English fluently in no time.
Pick up a newspaper. Spot those words that are hard to pronounce. For example, Allegedly. DON'T pronounce it as alli-jet-ly, it's a-ligedly. (Correct me if i'm wrong.
)
Watch more English movies. Especially those with English subtitles. Look at the way the artiste speak. Learn from them.
Lastly, hang out with that group of frens as frequent as possible. Speak to them confidently in English. That way u can improve ur language command and at the same time, be able to mix around with them.
(P.S. Haha.. How come u all post missqi's blog? LOL)

but if you wanna improve yr articulation in english, try reading books out loud or speak to the mirror to gain some confidence first, then perhaps move on to interacting with those bunch of peeps you wanna mix with. u can learn frm them too, its alright if yr english sucks. they wont mind if they're 'mature'. -

i have a friend like u. short tongue or something. he's studying fine in England now. His english might not be perfect, but its more than understandable. Practice hard and u'll improve. personally, my opinion is, the language one speaks is not an indication purely of intelligence. However, the native tongue of a person can give clues to the sort of social conditioning he or she has received. This gives a good indication of the level of conservativeness of an individual, which might manifest itself as an image, whether true or not, of lower intelligence when it comes to dealing with advanced ideas or issues. -
Listening to English music or movie. But I always end up reading the chinese subtitile. Can try British Council. I am going this June 2006.

well, if u want to improve on the way u speak in english,u just got to start speaking in english and not chinese. haf intensive english programme.lol. i guess the only way to improve on ur english is to speak completely in english.but of cuz it ain't gonna show in a month's time. everything will show when the time is right. dun rush,just take it easy and speak in english daily.i'm sure that ur english will definitely improve yeah? dun give up.

I fully understand your situation threadstarter, for me at primary school, i personnely suffer from communciation problems due to the fact that i have short tongue.
Thankfully, i have great teachers who helped me alot. I will just list down the things that i been trying 2 overcome my short tongue which i have done quite sucessfully
First - understand the words you are trying to speak. Know how to pronouce them and try to converse slowly. Do not Jump the Gun and rattle your words. Take your time. For example. If your friend were to ask u. Hey do u want to come out for lunch tml? You can always replay. Err, Can you givee mee sommeee timeee??? Take your time to articulate your words. Only learning how 2 pronouce these words slowly then u can take the 2nd step by saying it quickly
Secondly. Try to Read aloud when u are reading english articles esp on newspapers. Try to go at your own pace. As said from bros here, Practice makes perfect. Go at a slower pace, when you are ready, then increase your speed. Your friends will understand you and they will help you perfect the language.
Thirdly. I will advise you to reduce using chinese to converse. When you are at home, it is always good, if you can speak and use simple senteces by english. For example. Dinner is ready. I go and bathe. Do you all wish to watch tv? I wan to eat oranges. etc etc. It is the small little steps that are vital to your sucess.
Last but not least. If u believe in god. God will only help those who help themselves. If you are a buddhist. Guan yin hui bao you ni de. Jia You. All the best bro. if u need more info can always pm me. For i am in the same situation as you before. -

I have never encountered problems with English.
Because from young, I read voraciferously and spoke it at home.
The best time to teach a child a new language/ a lanuguage, is before he or she turns 12.
All is not lost though.
I noticed standards here are super duper laoya.
People cannot differentiate between "their" and "they're".
You, perhaps, can start a blog, and type in proper English. -

No singlish, no chinese shows, ignore all conversation which starts with chinese or other languages ( this sounds rather bad), watch english shows / movies. Talk to everyone in proper english !

Join Toastmasters' Club... in each meeting ur given the chance to speak about a topic in English. And there will be (friendly) evaluators who give you constructive advice...
There are 100+ Toastmasters clubs around S'pore.. so no matter where you stay ur not too far from one... hope this helps... -
