I think i have a problem communicating wif gals

Hi guys, I always have a problem of sustaining a proper conversation wif gals. Ｉam fine toking to guys abt life, soccer, hobbies and other random stuff. But wif gals, I find it very hard to open up to them.
1)Eg i ask gal A ''hows life recently?'' She replies, ''Im fine.'' Then, an awkward silence ensues and i find myself scratching my head for common topics.
2) I dont go shopping, gossip and do stuff that gals enjoy. Naturally, i have no common ground wif gals. How to resolve this dilemma?
3)I have finished school and army. Not studying anymore and my workplace are mostly guys. i dun dare to pickup gals on the streets. How do i widen my social network of the opposite sex?
Need genuine advice here. Thks. -

Talking to people needs purpose. You chat cos you are interested to find out more about them, etc...
What is your objective of talking to them? What you quoted in your e.g. was the '5 sec elevator chat'

This is the infamous HDB 5-sec chat line. Use it to waste 5 sec of saliva. Add grunts or noise to vary the duration.
When talking with a purpose, you need to know what you wish to establish. Do you wish to waste time, date her out, build relationships, etc..??
You also need to asssess your 'opponent'. Dun ask stupid question. Make a smart assumption and let him/her affirm it or deny it.
For example:
You see your sweating neighbour in running attire.....
You: " Just came back from swmiming?"!!!
^%$^%&(^%&^% FAIL!
Instead,
You: " Just came back from gym/run?"
neighbour: " Yah, exercise feels so good!"
You: "Wow, what a sporty person you are,......"
The trick in striking up a conversation is, like playing racket games, you need to hit the ball to the opponent if you wish to rally. If you wish to cut short a conversation, you need to 'smash' or hit to the opposite direction of where she's running.

You just need to find a common topic to talk about and start off. Like a classmate, ask about assignment and all those.
After she reply you can start talking about your day to start her engine, trust me, girls can talk ALOT. You don't need to be very knowledgeable to talk to girl, just be humourous, upbeat and cool.
Just say stuffs you'll normally say to your friends, but try not to act like you've known her for 10 years. You should trial and error to find her softspot topic, goals are not scored everytime yeah? Poke fun at yourself, be confident of yourself, poke fun at her. What I like to do is to showoff a bit every now and then.
And just keep looking at her eyes, if she looks away, it's usually a good sign. Even myself, I'm prone to committing that mistake.

Learn to cook ( most girls like men who cooks )
Learn to bake ( as mentioned above )
Pick up a social hobby ( Dancing, baking lessons etc )
For the extreme measure , switch to a job that has a even female:male ratio environment

try to be more open to topics. If the girl has common friends, can talk about you went out with some of the common friends or even ask if she still contact whoever whoever.
chat about music, movies, or sports? depend on what kind of girl really. :) depend on place you are and going. if anything is preplanned, scripted, it's not natural.
conversation should be a flow.
