SINGAPORE: SBS Transit has placed orders worth a total of S$311 million for 665 buses, all of which come with wheelchair-friendly features, the transport operator said on Tuesday (July 1).
The purchase comprises 250 single-deck Mercedes Citaro buses and 415 double-deck Volvo B9TL Wright buses. Of the new buses, 296 will be funded by the Government under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme, SBS Transit said.
Mr Gan Juay Kiat, CEO of SBS Transit, said: “We have committed around S$1.3 billion to purchase more than 3,000 buses since our fleet renewal programme began in 2006. By 2017, we would have replaced almost the entire fleet, and expanded the fleet by more than 36 per cent.”
Delivery of the latest purchase is scheduled to begin in mid-2015. By 2017, when all the new buses have been delivered, more than 90 per cent of its fleet of about 3,800 buses will be Euro IV-compliant and above, and almost the entire fleet will be wheelchair-accessible, SBS Transit said.
Mr Chwee Meng Chong, a wheelchair user who takes services 131 and 141 regularly to go for medical checkups, welcomed the news. “With the delivery of more wheelchair-friendly buses, more services will become wheelchair-accessible. I look forward to taking these new services to go to more places in Singapore,” said the 85-year-old retiree.

This trend of standardization is set to continue...
The interesting part is that the order for double-decker buses is more than the single-decker buses this time round. More SD-only routes could potentially receive DD buses.

put a tiger head on the citaro?
Just hope that the new batch of buses will receive ZF gearboxes instead. The Wrights might have daytime LEDs included as per the updated WEG2 bodywork (like KMB's B9TL WEG2 12.8m). The Citaro may also receive daytime LEDs too (like MVG's facelift Citaro).
I think all JIS services should start receiving Volvo B9TL/Wrights from now on.
Well, I suppose by the time this new batch of buses arrive, the remaining few non-WAB buses would all concentrate at cross-boarder routes and replace the scania KUBs. The scania KUBs now on cross-boarder routes could be re-deployed to routes in mainland Singapore and enable every SBS Transit bus service in mainland Singapore to be WAB.

No, they already changed to cross-border routes. But they allow to change mind to keep all non-WAB buses to be replaced as fast as possible.

Yes! Hope so! Because the Voith Gearboxes makes the bus even slower, slowing down your time getting to your destination.

Agreed, the ZF Wrights are much better in performance and sound nicer than the boring Voith... SBS Transit, bring back the ZF Wrights!

As of Today, there is only one Volvo B9TL/Wright on JIS Svc 246, it was added under BSEP.
SBS3325U(BSEP Batch 1)
citaro is full made by Mercedes so don't know what gear box the company using to the bus. it own gear box? also there is a problem the exhaust pipe is on the left side of the bus, so after five or six years people waiting at the bus stop might get black smoke on to them. maybe sbst get citaro and smrt get man bus when come to contract operators, get mix model of bus? also don't forget the smrt DD buses.

Mercedes Citaro should be the latest Euro 6 7,700cc 299hp
I would wish to understand if the current Euro 5 Citaro 2 has stopped production...
Anyway, SBS Transit has also released the news...http://www.sbstransit.com.sg/press/2014-07-01-02.aspx

As mentioned in the news release, Volvo B9TL will still be bodied by Wright...the looking for it may still be the same...but I can't say for the Citaros though.
More Wrights...I do hope they make some changes...
Instead of having the cooling system on the upper deck rear, coming out below the last row of seats, could they change it to lower deck rear? It's kind of "hot" when you sit on the last row...especially for long distance travel.

Mercedes does not make any gearbox for the Citaros. However, the Voith DIWA 4 speed is offered by Mercedes as the standard transmission and ZF Ecolife 6 speed as an option to the Citaros.

I doubt it. If there was a better emissions standard or a new version of the product, they would have announced it as their main selling point.

Where did they mention about Euro VI? On the official press release it stated Euro V. I was thinking that it's still the old facelift Citaro but with the daytime LEDs (post 2012 version).
As for the Wright it should just be a minor facelift too to include the LEDs.
