SingTel will launch its 4G services on Tuesday offering five times faster surfing for smartphone users. But the faster speed comes at a price - smartphone users, including 3G ones, will no longer be able to enjoy the generous data caps that come with their plans.
The telco will remove its generous data cap of 12GB - or 30GB for a premium plan - that comes with mobile data subscriptions.
Under its new pricing, which will kick in July 1, customers will only get 2GB to 12GB of free data download.
Every extra 2KB of data used will cost 1 cent - or $5.35 per GB - capped at $94 per month.

SingTel will launch its fourth-generation, or '4G', mobile services on Tuesday offering about four times faster surfing for smartphone users. Three models of 4G phones are available for starters.
But the faster speed comes at a price - smartphone users, including 3G ones, will no longer be able to enjoy the generous data caps that come with their plans.
The data cap will drop from the current 12GB to 2GB. For its premium plan, the cap will also come down to 12GB from 30GB.
StarHub revising data plans as well
StarHub announced on Monday that they were also revising their data plans 'to better manage finite network resources'.
From July 1 2012, new and re-contracting customers will need to choose from any of the three i2Surf plans, which offer data bundles from 1GB to 5GB. These plans come with a $30 data price cap, as well as a free 24-month multiSIM service.
The i2Surf plans were launched more than seven months ago. StarHub added on Monday that more details on their LTE devices and services would be announced later.
Every extra 2KB of data used will cost an additional 1 cent - or $5.35 per GB - capped at $94 per month. These changes will kick in on July 1, and will apply to both its 3G and 4G smartphone plans.

CASE receives complaints on telcos' move to cut data plans
SINGAPORE: The Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) said it has received three complaints regarding recent moves by two telcos to slash the data cap in new and renewed mobile plans.
SingTel's previous cap of 12GB of free mobile data use will be trimmed to as low as 2GB next month for new and re-contracting subscribers.
StarHub will make a similar move and offer free mobile data of just between 1GB and 5GB.
The telcos have said that the new pricing model will help them maintain prices on the back of rising network costs.
CASE said telcos should exercise transparency and explain clearly reasons for the price changes.
It added that the telcos should justify their actions and let consumers know what they can expect from the changes.
On whether the telcos' actions are anti-competitive, one lawyer said there are several factors to consider.
Steven
Lam, partner at JTJB Law Firm, said: "In Singapore, we have three
telcos - SingTel, M1 and StarHub. The competition commission will look
at the new price plans and see if they are similar...Because if they are
similar...then there might be a consideration (of) whether it is
anti-competition."

They are blaming us for slow speed... say we constantly using 3G data causing their infra to tak boleh tahan so that's why slow, must limit...
we are always to blame...
jin sad jin moody :(
did m1 reduce data too? hope they stay put...

nope... apparently they are taking the approach of "higher price = less user = less lag"...
akin to our COE system...
I hope more people would jump on the 4G wagon, to release more bandwidth on the 3G wagon.
I am recontracting both my 3G plans before the end of June.

will there be ERPs and COEs for internet usage in the near future?
hard to say... maybe might have since it's "traffic"
12GB to 2GB....
But 1gb of data is much cheaper now, from $12000 to $5.
COE is already a shiny example that higher price =/= less demand or less user
They should just spend money improving their own infrastructure
And the 3G network is so screwed up that you keep losing connection when you are in the MRT
this is also a shining example of the sheer uselessness of CASE

Because firstly SIngapore must follow through its "free business" case or risk shooting itself in the foot. (Of course it depends on what you view as free business)
Secondly, CASE is not the anti-competition body.
CCS is.
People should lodge the complaint there.
Not CASE.
