up to CO's discretion...
the offender might just get away with SOL (stoppage of leave) suspension for a no. of days. this means he will still get a formal charge record on his files. e.g. if it is for 21 days, he will be confined in camp for 21 days straight. then from 6am to 12am, every 2 hours intervals, he must report to guardroom or s1 branch to sign a book. strict units will have the guy dressed in full no.4, march to there to sign.
the no.of days for SOL is up to the officer, can be up to 40 days.
say... u give ur account of story to CO to plead for leniency, see whether CO is hard on punishment with / without leniency for not... if u have a not so good image in camp, then straight to DB. if u r in some officers' good books and they speak up to CO for u even though u AWOL, then u get away with SOL.
if send to DB, IIRC for more than a week or two, ORD will be extended. -
AWOL = not always go DB
like what eac says, it depends.
last time my camp, got one guy AWOL but OC cover up for him and the case never reach CO or that level, but OC give him SOL for 2 weeks.
it all depends on the officer handling your case. If it's those officers very nasty one, then of course is DB.
