What is the pay scale of specialist?
Would you advise signing on as a spec? Or do you believe in "officer or nothing" when signing on?
my cousin is a staff sergeant
he is 43 years and highly respected

43 yr old still a SSG should be a condemn solider and thus can't be promoted further...

Well.. Can't use one pole to sweep a boat full of people into the river right?
Maybe he's highly respected among his men and peers, but not very high EQ and hence dunno how to PR with the right people in management?

Will require someone who knows the person to answer that then. Personally i worked under 1 such condemn SSG before and i would say its expected that he did not get his promotion. Hes still kept in service cos his technical skills are good but he sucks as a person.
Thanks for the input. The reason why i'm asking is because someone I know wants to sign on as a spec and i'm like kinda counselling him.
At the beginning he said that he wanted to sign on as officer. He had failed to make it to OCS. He has a poly diploma.
Diploma holders can be officers as well. So I don't advise him to sign on the spec route. What do you all think?

43 is very old to be staff sergeant. 43 should be at least 1WO. In fact, i'm not surprised if there are SWO at 43.

Wah kaoz... my platoon sergeant 28 nia, is already a staff sergeant...
My BMT company CSM... 29 years old nia.... fucking Master Sergeant already.
There is this warrant officer that I know 30+ nia second warrant already going first warrant soon..
But there are others that cannot be promoted to Master Sergeant unless you fulfil the airborne course or the wat survival course. That is why some stuck until siao...
salary range:
SSGT i think only around 3-3.3K nia...
Only when you reach warrant then you would hit 4 bei...
But for specialist route even if you hit SWO also would not hit 5 digits...
Last time, I recommend ppl to get posted to unit after bmt before considering sign-on.
Now, I recommend ppl to ORD liao, start working life for a few years liao and still think SAF is good life then go ahead and sign-on.
My reason is still the same but scope just expanded, try to make decision only after you have experience the other options, in this case, not just unit life but working life outside SAF as well.

somethings wrong with your 'proposed advice'. by the time the person decided he should sign on after spending time in 'working life outside SAF', he will be grossly old compared to his peers. which means his career starts in SAF as gonecase.
i've seen such people around in SAF. got this guy, signed on at 28 yr old. now he is 31 and is still a CPT.
second, conversely people can argue back that you should experience commander life before trying working life outside the SAF, who's to say which should come first. The work one does as a foot soldier during BMT is not scarecely close to what the PC or OC does.

some guy who has ORD 8 yrs ago and was not a commander in his NS days claim to me that SWO can earn $10k. is that true?

thats so little. for officers, farmer graduate with good honours can get $4k+ as CPT one year after graduation.
So would you all advise him to sign on as a spec?
MDES is not considered here? for spec, have to consider what are the things that he will be involved in for his interested vocation... and also the various kinds of requirements. [army side i know quite lek cek]
mdes is only for service side and not combat, and combat specialists gets promoted faster..
I think MDES got no hope. Most people say they rather sign on as spec than MDES. no idea why.
maybe cos of those lek cek things liek compulsory shooting proficiency + confidence badges? but somehow, some service side personnel are still quite high-flyer with those on the combat side.

do you know if existing service officers and specs have to change to MDES or if its optional for them? and how do you approach someone from MDES then? Do you address Sir?
If commissioned officers switch to MDES, they become decommissioned as what i've heard. I think service officers will not switch but the specs will switch. haha.
