  2 fires break out at Boat Quay in a day

  SINGAPORE: Two fires broke out at Boat Quay on Thursday morning (Jul 28). 

  
  

  The first occurred at the Penny Black bar, located at 27 Boat Quay. No one was injured in the fire, which was extinguished by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) with one water jet.

  
  

  According to SCDF, the fire involved contents of a kitchen on the second floor of the restaurant. It dispatched two fire bikes, a fire engine, two Red Rhinos, a support vehicle and an ambulance. 

  
  

  The cause of fire is under investigation, SCDF said.

  
  

  According to pub owner Bjorn Seegers, it was a faulty deep fryer that caused the fire. “The incident was reported to the SCDF by the staff. They all followed protocol and the fire was put out within 20 minutes. All was contained pretty quickly,” he said.

  
  

  While the damage was “minimal”, Mr Seegers added that there is still a procedure to follow, such as getting licensed electrical workers to carry out a check. The owner also clarified that business will go on as usual, but no food will be served as the kitchen will be closed for renovation.

  SECOND FIRE AT HARRY'S BAR

  There was also a second fire which broke out at Harry's Bar. SCDF said it was alerted to a blaze at 28 Boat Quay at about 11.45am, and sent a fire engine, two red rhinos and three support vehicles to the scene.

   

  The fire involved the "attic crawl space" of the roof, and two water jets and an aerial monitor were used to contain the fire, SCDF said in a Facebook post. 

   

  "As a precautionary measure, several patrons of an adjoining restaurant were evacuated by SCDF personnel," it said. "There were no reported injuries and SCDF is investigating the cause of the fire."
