I’m staying near to the MRT station at Sembawang and just bought my self a new sound level meter. Try to measure that every time when the MRT pass by, arriving or departing. Found that the noise level is up to 75~82db which is out of the healthy residence area where should be below 65db.
Should LTA or MRT companies to install the sound absorption panel next to the track near the residence area?
Traveled to Korea, Japan and Taiwan before and found that most of their MRT track or highways have install kind of sound absorption panel to reduce the noise created by the vehicles.
Should LTA or MRT companies do the same thing to improve our life style?
Lol who are you? Why must LTA listen to you and install those things? Unless you minister. They won't care for such things, just bear with it.
You bought yourself a new sound level meter?
What happened to your old one? I've had mine for a good 12 years now and it still works fine.
You can feedback to NEA, but I can tell you, LTA writes its specifications to follow NEA. So uh, you will get into a circle of tai chi.

The MRT was built first before you moved in.
So you already know MRT makes noise.
So why do you buy a HDB flat next to the MRT station?
Reading your post I feel that you are indeed a fortunate person. Not many people who like buying Sound Level Meters have the opportunity to measure them in the convenience of their house.
And what better subject matter to measure it on than our own SMRT Train System.
I myself don't think i'd ever be able to take the noise of the train passing by daily. Therefore i don't think i'll ever buy a house next to the train tracks.
Cheers!
In those countries, they must actually listen to the people. LTA won't even bother to reply to that, I'm telling you.

Maybe he/she under estimate the noise.
But anyway living very near to MRT station also no privacy.
Most probably he measured a C751B. You could hear it from 300m away =P. And very clear. Its obviously not below 65db =P.

i can't even hear a C751B from 300m away. more like a C651 would be able to do that. my house is nearly 500m away from Admiralty Station, can hear a C651 pull away from the station, but a bit vague.

i think you should try not to show off your new equipments...
I tot there's law to regulate noise level of MRT trains.
Calibrated sound meters are not cheap to purchase, the last time I bought the cheapest one, was S$1200, after discount. The hardest thing to take care of is the sponge piece.
Seen like this is really an issue bothering lots of people. Anyway, I just bought my self a mini sound level meter, Blue Gizmo brand and model number of BG325. It only cost me few hundred of sing-dollar.
Linwei20, Junyang700 & Mrtdude5: Understand that the government in Taiwan, Japan and Korea are listening to the people but in Singapore…the people, we are listening to the government. Agree that but not feeling satisfy. As the world class country, residence’s living standard & environment should be very take care by the authorities. Then, only we can call our self as number 1. Isn’t it?
Audiophile: Thanks. As a residence, I think we have the responsible to help to raise the issue to the authority and also increase the awareness to the public.
Dragonaxe& TIB1051D: Not thinking to raise this problem to the authority? I know it is difficult but we gotta try. Isn’t it.
Ditzy: Thanks for the information. Ya. Did complain to NEA…no respond from them as you mentioned. As they said that the noise above 75db should longer then 5mins then only can consider as a “noise”…seen the train only pass by lesser than 1 minute so it is still under requirement….they forget that the train almost pass by every 10mins.
Junyang700: Buying house in which location is my personal business. Hope you understand it. MRT making noise and disturb our life is the problem they have to solve. Isn’t it?
Guys can google get the information about the train system in Tokyo, Soul and Taipei city. Their authorities really doing a good job. I believe Singapore can do the same. If we want it..

I guess no choice. The only way is to move house..
My friend lives about 800m away from the Choa Chu Kang LRT station and he always wake up by the sound of the station announcement that goes "Please stand behind the yellow line" at 5am in the morning..... The noise gets away at about 630am... when people start to fill the stations with voices....
I am glad I live next to a park.. and all I hear is the sound of frogs and monkeys fighting ....LOL...
Try living under the flight path of Paya Lebar air base then you'll be glad to live by the MRT tracks.

Haha...
Anyway, this guy shouldnt complain...
He wants to live next to the MRT Station and complains its noisy.. nobody can help....
Its like living in Orchard Road belt and then complaining that there are too many people walking on the streets everyday...
Or living next to a temple and then complaining that the incense smell is very strong.
At least if he had shifted in before a temple was built or floods came in... he had some reason to complain.. but in this case, he has no reasons to complain... as he already knew there is a station next to it, and he wants to live there!

Pros and Cons living beside MRT Station.
Pros : Convenient to MRT station
Cons : Noisy all day long, because service truck fix tracks around 1-5am
Pros and Cons living beside MRT tracks
Pros : NOTHING\
Cons : No Privacy, Noisy all day long.
BTW, you very power leh, go buy calibrated sound meter. Its darn expensive. You may try changing your windows with sound-proof glass. =P. But they are expensive. You should try living in the North East. Its awesome there =P
Junyang700: That’s a solution. Where Japan, Korea or Taiwan can do it why we can’t? It is avoidable just with some extra engineering work.
Your examples don’t make any sense. It is not comparing apple and apple but it is compare apple with watermelon, with others. We have to compare MRT to MRT not MRT to Orchard or temple….
Let’s see, why the train station in Japan, Korea or Taiwan can resolve this problem by just installing the sound absorption panel. Why we can’t? Why now a day, most of the stations install the glass auto-gate? Because that is the solution to prevent the people to jump to the track to create lots of problem. In fact, this system has been installed in the 3 countries as mention above MRT station for some time ago.
I’m very sure this problem is solvable. We should face the problem and solve it instead of run away from it. Anyway, really admire that you can always hear the sound of frogs and monkey fighting…LOL
Dragonaxe: J I think the one who should spend the $ to buy the calibrated sound meter or installing us the wound-proof glasses is the train authority. Not us.
Can’t really move to North East…kids and work all in center….nothing much can do…

Ahh, if SMRT / LTA wishes to install sound-proof glass around the tracks, it would cost at least 1 billion. Since 1 sound-proof door cost at least US1195. Building the soundproof glass around the tracks would cost a bomb. =P
Why not just make it underground?

In Singapore, everything is about cost.
Look at what SMRT responded in the past... and you know it....
Everyone suggested building window glass gate doors on overhead stations to prevent people from falling in or committing suicide few years back.... SMRT response was that it was not economically viable.
They changed their response last year, only when there were too many people jumping into the stations and that their MRT could not resume services, leading to heavy losses where they have to provide free shuttle buses to do bridging services before they actually started installing those window panels...
What you can do is to feedback your town council.... and SMRT... but I would say the probability of building sound absorption panels is almost zero.
