Exit fears: Benitez is worried Liverpool could lose their best players this summer
Rafa Benitez fears he will lose his best players this summer if Liverpool fail to finish in the top four and qualify for next season's Champions League.
The under pressure Spaniard believes his side's final league place this term will have a significant bearing on his transfer options in the summer but could also see the likes of Fernando Torres, Javier Mascherano and captain Steven Gerrard up for grabs.
'Players want to win trophies and want to finish in the top four,' said Benitez. 'This club is a massive club so if we can progress in the Europa League and finish in the top four a lot of [other] players will be thinking whether to come here or stay where they are.'
Liverpool are sixth in the Barclays Premier League, four points behind fourth-placed Tottenham having played a match more, having slipped to ten defeats this term.
But Benitez, who has already agreed a pre-contract deal with Standard Liege forward
Milan Jovanovic, believes the incentive to finish fourth and win the Europa League
applies not only to his players but any prospective new signings.
May the fourth be with you: Benitez wants to keep hold of Gerrard and Torres but admits Liverpool must finish fourth and qualify for next term's Champions League
'The players know it is important to perform now for the future and they want to stay here so I think it will be okay. 'We are now in a situation where we have to move forward and try to bring the best from each player.
'It is not easy to stay at a very good level in a season. The main thing is we have some players coming back from injuries and if they are together I'm sure we'll do really well.'
Liverpool host Sunderland on Sunday and go into a Europa League quarter-final against Benfica next week hoping there is still a chance of winning some silverware.
I hope to see liverpool get relegated one day.
I hope Liverpool lose to sunderland. =P
who dont know?
if? it should be when liverpool miss out on top four....
mathemathically liverpool still have a chance but realistically i say no; spurs are 4 pts ahead with one game in hand; city are 2 pts ahead with one game in hand; villa are on level pt with one game in hand.
and spurs have a much better goal difference too.
Villa wasted lah, if they had beaten Wolves and Sunderland they would be way ahead of Liverpool.............Rafa should aim to finish in 7th place...............ahead of Everton............
most likely Spurs in 4th...............if the gap stays the same for the next 2 games, then Liverpool will throw in the towel and finish in 7th place..........
all Liverpool fans can then celebrate the resignation/sacking of Rafa.................
if lose
blame Rafa
If Liverpool cannot stay in 4th position, Ah Ben should resign.
Liverpool have been fighting for the 4th position for the past few seasons.
It is pretty sickening that Liverpool dun really launch any title challenge.
Ah Ben should admit defeat and move on.
No point staying around and be hated later part of the Liverpool era.
Hiazz damn jialat now
i hope a miracle will occur and Liverpool will somehow make it to 4th place
i dont even think why top 4 is possible now.
of course i hope we'll clinch it eventually, but it dont look likely at all.
i think rafa shd resign, he shd let himself be remembered as one who has won the european cup for them and also his graciousness.
100 players and EPL title....that's rather telling, isn't it.

this should speaks it all.
The capable players are booted out or cold storage if they go against him.
He is also useless in getting players to play his best.
Even he got the player that he want (eg. Aquaman), he dun deploy or use him fully after he is recovered.
He is also not improving the team play with the players that he have.
When was the last time liverpool won a EPL title ? 10 years ago ? seriously all of you liverpool fans got trolled by rafa, aka the best troll ever was. I wont be surprised if gerald plays as goalkeeper next game.
Mathematically, Pool are still in with a good chance. Why I say so is, Spurs despite leading them by 7 points currently, they still need to play the likes of United, Chelsea, Arsenal and City in theirlast 7 games... So Spurs could drop anything from at least 6 to 12 points... So I wouldn't bet on them just yet...
If Pool don't make it to the top 4, better players might not want to join them for next season even if they got the money...
