GE: Tanjong Pagar GRC unlikely to be contested
By Hetty Musfirah | Posted: 25 April 2011 1738 hrsSINGAPORE: The Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency led by Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew is unlikely to see a contest from the opposition.
Mr Ng Teck Siong, Mr Mohamed Nazem Suki, Mr Ng Pian Ying, Lim Mie and Abdullah Salam were planning to stand in the GRC.
But in a statement, the team said they are unable to move forward and contest in the constituency.
The team says this is due to a shortage of funds and the last minute withdrawal of support for two candidates from the Singapore Democratic Alliance.
The team added it is too late to find replacement candidates.
The members expressed disappointment as they feel "this GRC is supposed to be the best chance" for them to contest.
The opposition parties in Singapore had wanted to contest all seats in the upcoming general election.
Nomination day is on Wednesday while polling will take place on May 7.
