true, hokkien-speaking ppl may be regarded as low-class eg. tiger beer, endless 4D, vulgarities, ex-convicts, no manners, uneducated, and low-income, but hey, arent they also people who are also contributing to singapore's economy as well?

You may have graduated from an Ivy League school, speak Queen's english but at the end of the day, the person who pays your monthly salary speaks 80% hokkien, 10% Teochew and 10% Mandarin.
In short, money is still above class for me.

todays youth: spend 80% their $$, speak english, hate chinese, take taxi, nokia phone, demand class and high-end products when there are cheaper substitutes..
and yes, i agree with ToffeeClub.. most businesses you see today in singapore, dating back to pre-1942 days, were mostly ran by chinese, the multi-dialect people.. i dont see much bosses who speak 100% english and hates hokkein ppl.. since u say they low class, then no1 will be there to wash toilets, clear plates and do the simpler jobs.. no root, no flowers.. alamak you! -

im ashamed to know a gangster in my class and cant believe he behaves like that even though he is already 17 years old. he speaks hokien more than most ppl speak english. he loves to say vulgar words and speak in hokien even in front of teachers sometimes i dont even understand what he means but i couldnt care less. im not the only person who hates ppl like that

Well for me, listening to someone speak Hokkien is a torture to my ears. But then, I like it when people speak Teochew or Cantonese. Maybe Hokkien sounds kinda vulgar and crass. And those who speaks Hokkien do so ever so loudly, I've no idea why.

There are people who can speak Hokkien fluently and yet switch back to English without a single problem.I can do that.And I find your argument specious and lacking in coherence and foundation.
It is not Hokkien the language, per se, that describes a person's character.I have seen poseurs who attempt to sound bombastic with their English but they fail miserably and appear to be utter fools.

The last company i worked for, is a MNC selling heavy duty chemicals to industries like the shipping and cleaning services industries.
Salesmen still need to know some dialects to persuade people in those industries, like the supervisors or low level managment, to buy their products. -

And i know this guy who is a boss speak mostly hokkien unless or else business need den speak english(Like 80% hokkien+10% english+10% chinese),and he own a lambo and lot of his employer is graduate from high education well speaking in english..
