Private companies can never get hold of your criminal records. Only government sector can. However, that does not mean that when you applying for a job in a private company you can lie about your criminal records. Just pray that they won't ask.

over here (USA) it's not difficult to get a criminal background check on someone. If someone was convicted of a crime it's a matter of public record because they were convicted in a public court...i can go to the county Clerk of Courts office and check their records, but if you don't know all the counties the person has ever lived in it's pretty much hopeless. there's 3077 counties in the US, where do you start? add to that state and federal courts...
it would be damned near impossible to do that yourself so there are companies that have databases with this information and will sell it to you ...each has certain requirements to be met before selling you that information. -
they just can't access that info, simple as that. if you lie, they'll never know. but if they do find out your background by any circumstance, they have the rights take legal action against you. usually, even if they found out, it's usually dismissal.
that aside, say, wasn't there a singaporean ceo who got caught using a fake resume and sued, resulting in him ordered to pay back whatever salary he has thus drawn from his company?

They can... but the law changed.. your record will be cleared for trival crimes... For those who are serious case check the IC you know liao. Other than that... there is a gov department where you can check.
