bet this topic will end up having a heated 1. anyway i think that women should also serve NS. It is not just the duty of the mento do it.
Then in the war how ? the women do what ? ( i ask this because i really dont know, not really to question women's place anyway) women have long since wanted equal rights, education, power, job and promotion opportunities in workplace and everywhere. if you say that women are generally weaker than men and so men shld go to wars and fight instead .
look at israel . it's not that the state laws decrees that women shld join army then they join. it's probably their culture. anyway the women could serve as medics, nurses support staff in NS. since they want equal rights , they shld also join NS like the men.
many times i have heard from women demanding equal rights but when it comes to serving ns, they shy from it and just say " oh it's the men's duty, let them do it. why shld we? "
rights like freedom do come with a price, in workplaces they cannot demand equal pay etc compared to a male counterpart when he has higher edu level, greater experience and is proven to have the abilities. similarly men cannot also demand when the women has higher edu level, experience,etc.
if u want something , fight for it. isnt that also taught to you by yr parents ?
it is not a matter of courtesy for men to do ns, unlike in a date where it's courtesy to pay for the meals,movies,etc and also to send yr date home. as for helping to carry things , it's also courtesy.
let it be clear that my views are regarding the topic and NOT abt women and also it is my two cents worth. i can be wrong and so pls correct me. -
i have come to this irrefutable conclusion
singaporean guys always kaobeh gers shd do NS bcos they bu gan yuan they have to do and gers do not, not bcos they relli "care" for women or the military strength of the country....
they feel tt they are suffering in their lumber 4s...while gers are enjoying life on mainland singapore...
and they always like to use other countries to compare?
why not use other countries tt women oso no need do NS to compare? bet the list will be longer.......

i'm gonna sound like a weak man here becos i dun really give two hoots about women doing NS... to be honest.. if i knew another fit and normal singaporean guy that managed to siam NS but i had to go thru it, i wouldn't give two shits either...
but i do get hareyizu's point about fighting for freedom and wanting sexual equality...
i get his point... but doesn't mean i agree.. becos i dun believe in sexual equality... there are some things that men do better, and some that women do better. that's why we need each other. if there's two of us (i'm heterosexual so that's good!) wat i do best i'll do, wat she does best i'll leave it to her...
there's no such thing as sexual equality. -

regarding women fighting for equality....this has always been abused and misued by men when they want to taunt women into doing "men's work".....
this so-called fight's initation was to promote fair treatment in the workplace as well as women's social status in society....
it was never fought for equality in military contribution due to the physical differences and responsibilities of the 2 genders in society...
men shd be honoured tt they are recognised for their potential to undertake the sacred task of serving and protecting the country - the land and the rest of the people....
if eberyone is on the battlefield, then wat are we protecting? -
eh.. women ns not a bad idea... maybe selected onli loh... they can do the army office work and let the man go out and fight. this can put more man into fighting war. not all shold u know... when the man are serving ns, they need most of the gers to drive the economy well... without them.... maybe....

there are oredi women in SAF....the regular clerks, some are in control tower/bases handling communication equipment....not forgetting engineers....
doing the "soft jobs" of military operations...

Hahaha!!!Agree!! Once saw a girl got stuck on the stepping logs for half an hour because she was afraid of heights. But maybe if women really need to do NS, most probably doing the admin side is more appropriate. -

women in the SAF are NOT serving NS...
they are offering their services and expertise in an organisation on a contract basis....as like other ppl applying for jobs in a company...
they are not required to go through physical military training (like u have suggested in ur first post about women shd do "NS" )...and it's all at their own will...
pls note that this version of serving in SAF and ur intended "NS" are of different nature and purposes..... -

I feel that if a woman wants to do NS on a volunteer basis, go ahead! She should also enjoys the benifits that comes with it, tax cuts, U-entry benifits,etc,etc...
But on an enforce NS? I really don't know...got pros and cons... maybe NS in a different field? Nursing, Teaching? Civil Affairs? What u ppl think?

anyway, that's not the main point...i'm pretty sure most, if not all girls know how tough it is serving NS('cept for those LOBO personnel), we don't need them to go thru it just to be sure...it's like, i know it's painful to go into labour and conceive, but hey, i do not wan a piece of that action...on the other hand, it sort of boost the NSmen's morale if there's more char bors in camp...

but, come to think of it, i'm sure i'm gonna miss her now that she's been transfered to another unit...she has been with us for a long time, and even knows most of us by names...though she might be a little strick when we were still active, she knew how to relax when we became NSmen...
