  China's quake death toll rises to 14,866: state media

  BEIJING (AFP) - - The national death toll from the earthquake that struck southwest China has risen to 14,866, the official Xinhua news agency reported Wednesday.

  The toll was as of 2:00 pm (0600 GMT) on Wednesday, with 14,463 of the deaths in Sichuan province, Xinhua said, citing "authoritative sources".

  However, the tally appeared not to take into account reports of many thousands of deaths given by local government officials that Xinhua had previously reported. These would take the actual toll well above 20,000.

  There is always the refrain that Singapore is far from the teutonic, platonic or whatever plates and is in a sheltered area, and is on a solid granite foundation. Therefore Singapore does not prepare for disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis.

  If a meteorite the size of a bus were to crash into the South China Sea, the tsunami would go from Changi to Tuas.

  But an approaching meteorite can be monitored, and its entry and crashing point calculated. Therefore there would be sufficient time for the government to call us to clear out our in-house bomb shelter. But do we have enough instant noodles and torchlights and condoms?

  doesn't mean that not situated at a subduction zone will be immune to earthquakes.

  Sichuan wasn't situated in a subduction zone too, there were no earthquakes till today.

  S’pore sends rescue team to quake—hit China

  SINGAPORE: Singapore sent a team to China on Friday to help authorities there with search and rescue efforts in the aftermath of the Sichuan earthquake.

  The 55—member Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) is led by LTC Francis Ng How Juah, Commander of the 4th Civil Defence Division, says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

  A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) spokesman says the team brings with it rescue equipment like fibre—optic scopes, life detector systems and hydraulic cutters. Four search dogs are also on the mission.

  He adds that the contingent is self sufficient, with food, fuel and equipment that it has brought along. It is not yet clear which area team members are headed for, but they will work with the local authorities once they arrive in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province.

  The DART was sent following a request from China for help, says the MFA. China state media said early Friday it had accepted offers from Russia, South Korea and Singapore to send teams to help find thousands of victims trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings since Monday.

  Time is running out to find survivors, experts said, from the 7.9—magnitude quake which hit Sichuan province on Monday. Tens of thousands of people are dead, missing or trapped, China officials say. — CNA/ir

  Singapore’s rescue team arrives in China

  SINGAPORE: Fifty five officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) have arrived in China on Friday to help local authorities in search and rescue efforts.

  The death toll from Monday’s 7.9—magnitude quake has left over 22,000 dead, but China said the number is expected to exceed 50,000.

  Rescuers are still battling landslides, buckled roads and collapsed bridges in their efforts to rescue those trapped under fallen structures.

  The Singapore rescue team — codenamed Operation Lion Heart — includes seasoned officers from the elite Disaster Assistance & Rescue Team (DART). Four search dogs are also part of this mission.

  The team has brought along a host of rescue equipment like fibre—optic scopes, life—detector systems and hydraulic cutters and spreaders.

  The Singapore team will link up with local authorities for a briefing before being deployed to assigned areas to carry out search and rescue operations.

  The contingent is self—sufficient in terms of food, fuel and equipment as they have packed enough supplies for two weeks.

  SCDF maintains a rescue contingent on a 24—hour standby to provide rescue and humanitarian assistance to countries stricken by major disasters.

  China comes to standstill as quake toll hits 71,000

  BEIJING : More than 71,000 people are dead, buried or missing in southwest China's Sichuan province following last week's earthquake, state-run Xinhua news agency quoted the top provincial leader as saying on Monday.
  
  The number of people confirmed killed in the province as of late Sunday is 32,173, Sichuan Communist Party chief Liu Qibao said, according to Xinhua.
  
  Another 9,509 people remained buried and 29,418 others were missing, Liu said.
  
  The new toll was announced as China came to a standstill on Monday exactly one week after its earthquake tragedy, observing three minutes of silence to mourn the tens of thousands of people killed in the disaster.
  
  Across the vast country, millions of people stopped where they were and fell silent, while air-raid sirens blared and motorists honked their horns.
  
  The silent memorial began precisely at 2:28 pm (0628 GMT), the exact moment a week earlier when the quake struck southwestern China.
  
  Several thousand people gathered in Tiananmen Square in central Beijing, standing silently around a flagpole from which the red Chinese flag waved at half-mast. They burst into chants when the three minutes passed.
  
  In unison, the huge crowd shouted "Jia you! Jia you!," an exhortation that can be loosely translated as "Go! Go!", while punching the air with their fists.
  
  Others shouted out "Long live China!," "Long live Sichuan!," and "Long live Wenchuan!"
  
  Wenchuan county was the epicentre of last Monday's earthquake, which measured 8.0 on the Richter scale and devastated a wide area of Sichuan province.
