i think jealousy comes in two forms..
covetousness, and fear.
the first one, is when you don't stand to lose anything, but you just desire to possess something. - example: being jealous that neighbour have nicer car etc.
the second one, is when you stand to lose something. - example: jealous that gf gets along well with another guy.

Most of the time, people forget that its because we care.
I think its instinct provided by hormones.
Jealousy is fear that you can't have something that others have.
On the few occassions I get jealous, I try to use it to my advantage...like it makes me want to work harder to achieve that thing that the other person has. And feel happy for the person too - may the best man/woman win :)
