im 17 and i had an epiphany. having been born and bred in an english environment studying in elitist english primary-secondary-jc schools where at most one person in my class besides myself listened to chinese music, i, one day after watching a random taiwanese variety show in which they spoke abit of taiwanese, suddenly realised how little i was exposed to the Singaporean dialects i should have learnt in my childhood if not for a certain LKY. Thus began my journey to learn hokkien (im half hainanese and half hokkien but nobody speaks hainanese...) I managed to stuff myself with over a hundred taiwanese songs and dramas on youtube to the point where i am currently actually proficient in speaking and reading TAIWANESE. therefore i am hoping to learn singaporean hokkien and would wish to know where i could enroll in such courses in Singapore. Thanks to anyone who can help, understanding my plight of searching for my roots.
Haha same here. I learnt over TVB dramas though :)
I guess a grandparent would be a good place to start?

yay. now you can speak it with your friends.
problem here is my entire school except the china scholars are seriously anti-chinese and due to my upbringing, my entire social circle as well so theres no hope there. My dad can't speak chinese (for some reason my grandparents made all their children learn malay and didnt teach them chinese or dialect) and my mom and her entire family speaks hainanese which i can understand but cant speak and is completely irrelevant to my hokkien learning... i seriously envy those people who have parents who can teach them dialect but simply dont cos of LKY and his infatuation with the english and now mandarin language, on the other hand theres ppl like me who want to learn but simply cant unless seeking external help...
singapore hokkien is not totally the same as taiwan. got abit of malay also. but languages no matteer wad, is to communicate with each other, as long as u understand each other should be ok.

"her entire family speaks hainanese which i can understand but cant speak and is completely irrelevant to my hokkien learning"
wrong, because u haf not put in more effort to decipher what they talking about
hainanese evolved in a straight route from FuZhou -> PuTian -> QuanZhou -> XiaMen -> ZhangZhou -> ChaoZhou -> LeiZhou -> HaiNan
all are related, and when one speaks both Hainanese and Hokkien together, it helps each other out and strengthens both

The primary use of a language is communication. If you learn hokkien, but no one speak hokkien with you... why?
Get friend's who speak hokkien, or help out at old folk's home, there are elders there who speak hokkien. That should help.
