Go to the ICA building.
Your parents Singapore citizens, you born here no need to apply.
But if you are a foreigner, do not apply yet. You come here to study, so study first.
And if your results are fantastic, you just wait, they will come to you.
Thank you guys for the replies.
My family are Malaysian. My parents came Singapore 10 years ago and gotten the SPR.
5/6 years ago SG government offer my family a choice to convert to Singaporean but my parents don't want.
I just turned 21 this year so I've decided to convert to Singaporean due to several reasons.
My friend who is a malaysian is also converting to Singaporean due to high part-time UNI fees so I'll be going to ICA with her this Saturday.
She is working full time here while I'm a full time student. So I wanted to asked what are the chances for me to convert successfully.
Because I heard from some people that students are harder to get citizenship because students have no income. I wonder how true is the statement.
Application fee is $100 so I want to clear my doubt before applying.
I guess I'll have to ask ICA people this Saturday myself.
Once again thank you for replying. :)
From my understanding....
you need to be a Permanent Resident (PR) for at least 2 yrs (if i am not mistaken), before you are eliable to apply for citizenship.
@ your age, you may also need to service the national service.(if you are a male).
Best indication is to visit ICA for more accurate info. good luck.
I'm a female :D Thanks!
where are you from?
why do you want to apply citizenship here?

Malaysian is okay. Singapore and Malaysia are actually the same.
British Malaya loosely described a set of states on the Malay Peninsula and the Island of Singapore that were brought under Britishcontrol between the 18th and the 20th centuries.

I am from Malaysia. Singapore PR and lived in Singapore for almost 10 years.
I want to apply Singapore citizenship because I am more attached to Singapore. I seldom go back to Malaysia and I can hardly speak Melayu (Malay's language). My parents also support me to apply Singapore citizenship so I guess I will try to apply for it. :)

oic. so are you studying at local uni or polytechnic or private school?

Why? Your school never teach melayu? Malaysia citizen should know melayu. That is the dominant language. What is your strongest language?
In colonial Singapore, the nearest thing to a common language had been Bazaar Malay, a form of Malay with simplified grammar and a very restricted vocabulary that members of many ethnic groups used to communicate in the marketplace.
I read in another forum, people want to renounce citizenship.

Yea they did teach us Melayu ! But my primary school was a Chinese school so everything teach mainly in Mandarin.
My strongest language is Mandarin therefore I had a hard time studing in Singapore when I just came here because everything teach in English. After so many years, I kind of forgot most Melayu except for those very basic one.

I guess he doesn't want to serve NS that's why he wants to give up his SG citizenship? :(

Here the opposite is true. Chinese and other local languages like malay, tamil are taught as a secondary language while everything is in english. You can see most signs in Singapore are in english.
The reason why is because although 75% of Singaporeans are chinese, they do not hold political power. The power is controlled by peranakans and the language used by them is english from the british colonial era.
Lee Kuan Yew, Lee Hsien Loong, Kwa Geok Choo, Lim Yew Hock, Tony Tan, Wee Kim Wee, Goh Keng Swee, Toh Chin Chye, Lim Kim San and many others are all peranakans.
And since Lee Kuan Yew fears the political threat from the chinese in Singapore, the chinese schools must all be destroyed so that no chinese intellectual can come up from the chinese system to oppose his plans of anglicising Singapore.
Politics in Singapore cannot be understood without knowing that political power is controlled by peranakans.

You studied in chinese school, your mandarin standard is better.
We studied in ang moh school, our mandarin standard is shit.
The chinese in Malaysia and Singapore both do not hold power, so the dominant language in both countries are not chinese. That is why we should unite not divide.
