Asef: Pulled funding nothing to do with Govt

THE Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) has accused the Asia-Europe Foundation (Asef) of abruptly pulling out funding from a human rights seminar because of the party's participation in the event, a claim Asef rejected.
In a statement on Wednesday, the opposition party lambasted the Singapore-based foundation, asking if it had been 'assimilated' into the Singapore establishment to just go along with it.
Asef responded yesterday, saying that it had pulled funding from the event now being held in Kuala Lumpur as it only supports non-partisan, inclusive events to foster networking between the young in Asia and Europe.
But it found out only recently that all the participants of the seminar, organised by the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY), appeared to share the same liberal leanings, making it a partisan event.
The foundation was also concerned that the seminar could provide an occasion for individual member countries of the Asia-Europe Meeting (Asem) to be singled out for criticism, which would be contrary to its mission.
In its press release, the SDP asked if one reason for Asef's about-turn two weeks before the event began on Sunday was because of SDP Young Democrats' participation. It wished to know if the People's Action Party (PAP) Government was involved in the decision.
It also asked if Asef was allowed to operate independently of the Singapore government, given that its head office is here.
'Or has the organisation been assimilated into the Singapore establishment to portray to the world what the PAP wants Asef to portray?' it asked.
In response, Asef's public affairs director, Dr Albrecht Rothacher, said the fact that SDP or any other individual organisation participated was immaterial.
What was of concern was that all participants of the event seemed to be of the same political camp, based on an invitation list provided by IFLRY only after repeated requests over four months.
Asef said in a statement: 'The suggestion by the SDP that the Singapore Government was involved in Asef's decision has no basis in fact whatsoever. We deeply regret the suggestion.'
It said that it hoped the SDP's accusation 'was not calculated to create difficulties between Asef and the Government of Singapore, our host country'.
