I am sure the paper is more credible than some individual trying to defend a white man's country as if it is his or her motherland.Originally posted by fymk:Long have I learnt that academics and scholars constantly sitting behind a computer and a desk doing all their fancy research ....they don't really know what is going on in real life. Why? because they hardly step out to have a good look at what is going on in the grassroots .
Those who just cut and stick research without giving it much thought or analysis of the real situation are equally guilty of having a poor tunnel vision view of what is going on.

Note what I have said . I just said long have I learnt about research that comes from [b] people sitting behind desks - you know the type that comes from the ivory tower .
I don't have an issue with researchers who are still involved with the day to day practice and trying to improve things because they are the end users .
I am actually discrediting Gazelle for taking and pasting a piece of research which admits that it has its own weaknesses. It underrepresented some groups . Anyways , if you read the ANU paper - it is merely a telephone survey of 5056 people compared to over 20 million people in Australia. It has no strong conclusion. It is just a description of what those 5056 people think . No clear conclusions to state how they think the group surveyed are enough to provide a mildly skewed view. It is purely theorectical - no statistical methods on estimating racism at all - it is just purely descriptive summary statistics of opinions of people whom they surveyed( which is the most basic of all methods ) and it some how does not really link up to their study aims.
Mind you . Don't take it just as it is because a research says it is good or because the researcher or university has some reputation. I have read a sh!t paper coming out from some Harvard researchers before - one was about immunisation I think . Albeit there are alot of good papers but there are also sh!t papers who count on what you call a brandname of the school or researcher.

ROFL . And I am sure you are more credible to make such comments than I when you DO NOT even live in Australia - well NOT REALLY .Originally posted by Gazelle:I am sure the paper is more credible than some individual trying to defend a white man's country as if it is his or her motherland.
I can quite agree with the above.Originally posted by 798:where are the mod? feel that this thread has became a flaming thread...
can't you people have proper discussion instead of calling one another name?
I am merely commenting on what you posted as an argument to support your allegations.Originally posted by Gazelle:Are you saying that your personal view is more credible than the five thousands and fifty-six people that has participate in the survey?
actually it's just a discussion, i myself personally feel the majority of the white in australia are racist too. but there will be pple in australia who are friendly too.Originally posted by fymk:I can quite agree with the above.
Gazelle set up this thread with the sole intention of flaming people who might be in search of a better life elsewhere or maybe flaming a country who could have possibly refused him entry.
If the threadstarter was someone who actually live in Australia and could give concrete examples of how he has been discriminated against, I would have been happy to point him to authorities who might be able to assist him in getting some justice.
It can be a fair discussion but it is too biased to continue. However it is no longer a discussion when someone tells a person who actually lives in Australia to keep out of it (note first page) and not to mention telling that same person she went there to clean white bums.Originally posted by 798:actually it's just a discussion, i myself personally feel the majority of the white in australia are racist too. but there will be pple in australia who are friendly too.
some of my friends from australia told me dat. alot of asians are being ill-treated badly over there, n some of the chinese setting up shop have to pay protection money to white hooligans over there.Originally posted by fymk:It can be a fair discussion but it is too biased to continue. I am not denying that there are idiots in australia who discriminate but a country to be condemned as racist , that is very unfair to the majority of Australians who aren't racist .
Just out of curiosity why do you feel that way ? Personal experience? Or just from hearsay?
Ah . They could try moving to chinatown - they just need to pay the triadsOriginally posted by 798:some of my friends from australia told me dat. alot of asians are being ill-treated badly over there, n some of the chinese setting up shop have to pay protection money to white hooligans over there.
i believe being an asian, it's better to stay out of trouble over there.
So I guess singaporeans searching for a "better" life is in a white man's land is more important than singaporeans living in singapore huh? If you can criticise singapore why cant we criticise australia? White supremacy?Originally posted by fymk:I can quite agree with the above.

agree x 2!Originally posted by breytonhartge:The main bulk of asians here are the PRC people. Singaporeans and Malaysians only make up a small bulk of chinese people in Australia.
Initially when I came here to study, I experienced some racism. Still do these days, but if you stand up for yourself, they back down.
But then racism is to be expected, as singaporeans we are also racist, so what is so different from being a racist white person in australia and a racist chinese person in singapore?
There really is not point to the thread. Racism is present in all parts of the world, so why make so much noise about just australia?
I still live here by the way. FYI many of my good friends are aussie, true blue dinky dye aussie, and they are not just fair weather friends, they have been through a lot with me and still call me friend.
Lets face it, in every single country there are the good seeds and there are the bad seeds, thankfully the good outweighs the bad.
Truth be told . When I was just new in Melbourne and new in the job in the hospital, a few of my caucasian colleagues made racist remarks to me , I just basically laughed and treated them as though they were telling jokes.Originally posted by breytonhartge:The main bulk of asians here are the PRC people. at time we have to take things as pinch of salt, just laugh off when they make racist jokes. ain't we pple dun feel guilty when we laugh at racist jokes as well?Originally posted by fymk:Truth be told . By and by they became my greatest allies at work- they respected me as I respected them . I got supported in whatever I wanted to do because they were the main group who could make the choice between making your life an utter misery or just plain cruising at work.
Were they racist? In my opinion , no. They were just bloody insensitive at times. I told all of them while we were talking about good times when I came back to visit them.
Well, I find that the behaviour is not racist sometimes . It stems from a lack of understanding.Originally posted by 798:at time we have to take things as pinch of salt, just laugh off when they make racist jokes. ain't we pple dun feel guilty when we laugh at racist jokes as well?
I dont know why, but I can't seem to feel that this will happen here. People standing up for those who have been on the short end of the stick .Originally posted by fymk:Well, I find that the behaviour is not racist sometimes . It stems from a lack of understanding.
The only person I complained formally about racism was a migrant Brit colleague, not an Australian . She was terminated at the end because of alot of complaints about her making inappropriate remarks to patients as well - given the option to leave or the management will sack her.
She was what we termed the smiling assassin. She made one "immigrant" remark to me and the rest (especially the caucasian aussies) came down on her like a ton of bricks stating that she had no right to since she herself was a migrant . I didn't ask them to do that to her but they stood up for me anyways.
I think it is because of the Australian culture - somehow most australians I meet have the typical behaviour of sticking up for the someone down on their luck. They like to term it as mateship .Originally posted by LazerLordz:I dont know why, but I can't seem to feel that this will happen here. Aiyo, I used "Fcuk" word to my American buddies, "Wankers" to the British mates, "Bonkers to the Ozzies dudes, "Tiews" to my Hong Kong friendsOriginally posted by fymk:Well, I find that the behaviour is not racist sometimes . It stems from a lack of understanding.

And it's one of the criteria that the Immigration Dept was planning to introduce into the test aye?Originally posted by fymk:I think it is because of the Australian culture - somehow most australians I meet have the typical behaviour of sticking up for the someone down on their luck. I am not dumb enough to write down what others all know about long ago. You should try providing services to some camps. They will actually you what restrictions there are... yes, they will spell out and explain to you so you know who to send and who not to send.Originally posted by sgdiehard:Care to share what experience you encountered at the SAF's camp security and the employment policies?
