maybe its just part of the typical "heartland singaporean mindset" to dismiss any comment as racist while they themselves label people of other races eg. ang moh, bangla, thambi, mat, cheena etc... but when its their turn they make a big hoohah. that day at boat quay i shouted "RUN MATE RUN!" in the croc hunta accent at this white fella who was chasing after a cab he just laughed it off and gave the thumbs up. why can't people here learn to take jokes, afterall, they make racist jokes all the time

That's why the Singapore government should legislate to ban adverts requiring candidates to speak Chinese when the job does not require it. The onus will be on employers to show that lacking a particular language skill in that job will adversely affect the company. A tribunal should be set up to look into complaints and penalties must be harsh enough to deter racism in the workplace.Originally posted by bila_prem:THe chinese deserves such treatment by Australians...like singapore, if u take a look at the newspaper to look for a job, u see chinese only in most job advertisements. If you are in australia, its no chinese allowed in the company.

who knows, maybe to you the race riots back here in the past were jokes too. so was the mood of the fella who called malays pigs in the papers.Originally posted by Gazelle:You mean the beach party was a joke?![]()
Are you refering to the racial riots we have in 1964? I cant comment on that because I wasnt born yet, plus, why compare modern australians to the 60s coolies, fisherman and kampong boys?Originally posted by vito_corleone:who knows, maybe to you the race riots back here in the past were jokes too. so was the mood of the fella who called malays pigs in the papers.![]()

*yawns* If that logic of your response to Vito's post applies , you cannot even comment on Australia when you don't live in Australia .Originally posted by Gazelle:Are you refering to the racial riots we have in 1964? Your logic is being applied spatially. You don't live in that time or place, you forfeit your right to speak about a country you 'have yet existed in or don't live in.Originally posted by Gazelle:Are you saying it is wrong to comment on a country where you dont live in, but it is ok to comment on an event which happen at a time when you dont even exist in this world.
What is your logic?
if you're posting here im very sure you're living in the time when that fella called malays pigs and have heard the news about how employers discriminate against non-chinese with the "chinese-speaking only" ads. why compare? every country has racists and hicks and singapore has more than its fair share. like fymk said and as you put it, you're not physically present in the situation you're trying to critisize and have no first-hand experience whatsoever, where's the validity in your arguments?Originally posted by Gazelle:Are you refering to the racial riots we have in 1964? Where are you from? North or south of the River?Originally posted by someone111:Well, I had been in perth for 3 years now. I don't see any serious racism here. Occasionally, you will get a few drunken teens shouting some racist remarks, and I believe most of these teens would not do it when they are sober. When white girls hitched a hike, you give them a lift, they would still give u a hug and kiss u at the end of it.
Trust me on this, the educated ones and those in senior positions(especially the whites) of most companys are all trying their best to make this country free of racism. And that is what all of us should try to do in our own countries. I spoken to most of my aussie friends, and they reveal that they only dislike troublemakers, and most troublemaker comes from a certain enthic group. But overall, given more time I believe, countries whom put in effort into solving racism will gain from it and prosper.
I stayed in Australia for 5-6 years - no doubt you have some morons lurking about , you will find that Australia is a pretty ok place. The aussies are very direct and verbally open - if they are wrong, don't be afraid to tell them that they are wrong. That is how I dealt with people in Australia and I never had much problems.Originally posted by Vince Disel:Now, you guys are making me feel a bit apprehensive. i'm going there this Saturday for my studies you know...

[b]And how do you deal with the situation when someone insulted you in the public. Do you just look away and pretend you dont hear him or do you defend yourself by getting into some kind of fight or some agressive verbal exchange?
