Singapore: Defamation suits threaten Chee Soon Juan and erode freedom of expressionDon't allow fear into your life. Live as a free person. Free your mind.
"With defamation suits expected to be filed against an opposition leader, Chee Soon Juan, a general election campaign has once again been marked by the threat of politically-motivated libel actions, further restricting peaceful political activity and eroding the right to free speech," Amnesty International said today.
While the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) have maintained overwhelming parliamentary majorities since independence in 1965, its leaders have launched a series of civil defamation suits against opposition figures, asserting that the respect of the electorate and their ability to govern depended on their determination to defend their reputations when allegedly defamed.
Amnesty International has expressed concerns that this pattern of defamation suits has been both unnecessary and disproportionate and that, by undermining the requisite balance between the right to protection of reputation and the right to free speech, has amounted to a violation of the fundamental right to freely hold and peacefully express one's opinions.
Of course not everyone is like me and will write things against the dictators, some are like you, they start to worship the people that put the fear in them. It is known as the .... awww just google for yourself...Originally posted by Daddy!!:you have a dictator in you and you fear. Dont generalize that everyone is like you please.

no date lay.... it is a handsome turn out nevertheless.Originally posted by AndrewPKYap:BTW that is the WP rally... now those on the stage, they are the special people. Not perfect but special.
Good, I can sense the fear receding in you a little... now if only you can get rid of it completely your worship will cease and your thinking will improve.Originally posted by Daddy!!:thats the way, andrew. some humor is better than some hot air.
there are two types of fear, smart fear and stupid fear. know what i mean?
no lar, i never have the fear that you are talking about. i am amazed by the way you think.Originally posted by AndrewPKYap:Good, I can sense the fear receding in you a little... now if only you can get rid of it completely your worship will cease and your thinking will improve.
how can people that are griped with fear to the point that they worship the fear mongers "know" it? How can people that are making thinking errors know that they are thinking in error? *sigh*Originally posted by Daddy!!:no lar, i never have the fear that you are talking about. i am amazed by the way you think.
i am only a humble learner.
Yes, WP did have astonishing support at the rallies. And indeed they are special. Most are armchair critics but these rare few individuals stoodup AGAINST all ODDS. Put ourselves in their shoes in the environment we are in, and we may appreciate their effort. They risk it all for us. How many have what it takes to do this? few and far between. most are waiting for someone to stand up for them. Me included.Originally posted by AndrewPKYap:BTW that is the WP rally... now those on the stage, they are the special people. Not perfect but special.
Originally posted by Daddy!!:Excuse me for this interjection - but if you have not read his article, how can you conclude that it is useless to you ?
your article is useless to me since i have not read it. your article, itself, shows a weakness in you.
If a million more believe that there is a dictator in our midst, will that prove there is one, or does it prove your theory that it is ONLY in the minds of the 1,000,000 ?
CSJ and his sister certainly believe that there is a dictator, so of course, in their minds there is a dictator. You are one of them who have a dictator in their minds.
what i meant was that since i did not read the article, i wont know about what is written, therefore it is useless.Originally posted by Atobe:If a million more believe that there is a dictator in our midst, will that prove there is one, or does it prove your theory that it is ONLY in the minds of the 1,000,000 ?
What is others not in our midst can also see that there is a paternalistic autocrat who behave as if he is his sole right to be a Paternalistic Despot - does it mean that it is merely in the minds of the external observer and it is not Reality ?
From your perception of events, should one assume safely that it is all ONLY in the minds of ourselves - we see what we get ?
Originally posted by sgdiehard: 30 August 2007 08.41 PMCan there be ''a difference between need and want'' - unless you are using the words to express a measurement of the urgency of some desired object ?
There is a big difference between need and want. There is also a difference between meeting the common needs of a community as a whole and satisfying the selfish desire of individuals. Dis-satisfaction is a driving force, what goes beyond do not necessary always lead to raising the quality of life.
It seems odd that while you expect youths to be grateful to what is provided by their parent's generation, and that it is acceptable that they can be discontented with the society and you can accept that they improve that environment so as to benefit society as a whole - why will you take on a different cynical view that these youths will grow to want to merely give ''voice to their opinion and expect others to make the changes'' ?
What our youths have today, are mostly provided for by their parents. It is only right that they show appreciation to those provided for them. They are entitled to be dissatisfied with the society, the schools.... and if such dissatisfaction drives them to improve for the benefits of the society as a whole, well and good. But if they grow up just want to "voice their opinion" and expect others to make the changes, huhhh....I'd tell them they are lucky to be born in Singapore, even if their brains may be dulled. if they were born in a small town in a remote region in China or India, they may think they can think skillfully but they would have a lot more to think than the youths in Singapore, they would still be dissatisfied with the society, the schools, blah blah blah but they won't make any difference to anybody.![]()
You must think that you are right in believing that some youths will wine and dine, some will whine and die. Should you not at least consider if it will not depend on the motivational intensity of how contented a person is - or is not - towards the ''prevailing status quo'', and then decide to ''wine and dine'' or to ''whine and die'' ?
Being contented does not necessarily means no motivation to progress in other areas. AndrewPKYap can be contented with an HDB flat, at least for the time being, and focus on earning to buy a car, if that is his priority. If he wants a big car, a big house, yearly holidays at the same time, and he is not born with a golden spoon then he better buy more toto and dream on.
At the end of the day, some youths will wine and dine, some will whine and die. They alone write their future.

one of the best moral quotes in this forum,
"You can aim high to achieve high, but if you don't know how to appreciate what you already have, you have no respect for those who provide for you. No matter how much you achieve, if you don't know how to be contented with the things you have, you will never be happy. "

the article is of course resentments against his government again lar. well, i think this is his weakness; too much resentments inside himself. A person with too much resentments inside cannot go far. For instance, he will be easily instigated to lose his temper and his control, easily manipulated by others.
cheer up Andrew Yap !
This mentality needs to be investigated and researched scientifically and formally and I think only researchers from overseas can be in the position to do this study.Originally posted by AndrewPKYap:WP lost because people are apathetic and gripped with fear. People that are apathetic and fearful pay for it by having to settle their mortgage over long periods of their lives while the fear mongers sit there laughing at the apathetic people's stupidity and take millions of public money for their own pockets.
dont tell me his article is pro-government?Originally posted by Atobe:Why will you want to instigate him to lose his temper, and help him to loose control to be easily manipulated by others ?
Are you afraid of change, or are you simply fulfilling your own writing that you are contented with the status quo and will not accept change - even if the change towards a political better Singapore can be made ?
If you have not read Andrew Yaps' writings, and do not know what is written, how would you know that it is useless to yourself ?
Can you make a judgment on the value of something if it can benefit yourself, when you have not even viewed or considered the item ?
If everyone in the world adopt the same attitude as you, can the Mankind make any progress - in each of our compartmentalised world ?
Is it not a fact that it takes the sum total of every human efforts to make the World progress, and whether the effort will directly or indirectly affect ourselves, we all should celebrate and support such progressive human efforts ?
Why will you close the door, before the light even shine into your room - and worst still, to deride the person who made the light bulb ?
hahahahahahahaha You confess that you "did not read the article" but nevertheless you are so sure "of course resentments against his government again lar"Originally posted by Daddy!!:what i meant was that since i did not read the article, i wont know about what is written, therefore it is useless.
