With regards the 1st question, it is an opinion of the general population, and there's no one person who will know it unless he/she has done a full survey.

I feel very insulted when you impllied that the army is a place for losers who are not able to compete. Even though the SAF isn't a good place to source for a long term career, many men and women still have dedicated their services in the name of SAF. One of the more recent ones are the Tsunami rescue efforts in Aceh.
Of course, there're some people in SAF who we rather not know yet personally know some very fantastic people in SAF. And I definately find them competitive enough to leave the SAF.
Have you not done national services before? If you have, I feel very sorry for you. -

If you dont like army, you could also consider joining the airforce, Navy, or any of the government agencies where you dont have to compete with FT. -

From what I was told, the Saudi govern was still paying US for the 91 Gulf War as recent as like 3 years ago. -
