No big deal of NS, 2 years only mah. Why you all guys so lame one, like this only Cowbaycowboo.
Ya, nurse got uniform, so maybe nurse is out, since a professional nursing diploma also requires 3 years of training.
I think no one is cowbaycowboo here besides you ba =)
We're only discussing whether should women in Singapore do NS as well, and at least 3 of us, deathmaster, mancha and I realised that NS doesn't necessarily have to mean SAF, SPF or SCDF. Any other social-service related vocation can be considered as NS as well.
aiyo, the topic is already asking us women to debate on it, and TS is pointing toward SAF, me posting only, where got cowbaycowboo, parents still around,
ok ok, u guys means good and correct too.
And mind me, most nurses are foreigners now lor. My granpa warded into hospital also get to know PRC gals,..eh,,,i mean nurses, i will be damn, how he wants to go hospital to check up..those nurses
I never thought of NS as a waste of time.
If you think it is, then it's too bad.
If the govt is gonna feed and shelter me for 2 years while I pause and think about my next step, why not?
It's a welcomed break.
Besides, I consider myself fortunate. I've seen stuff I never thought I would see, and serve where few have never served.

Contributors have given many views of NS. Some thought provocating, some personal experiences. NS between the end of adolescent and the threshold of adulthood is really an unforgetable experience.
But I have this dimension to add. The followup years after NS is really the crux of the problem or more appropriately - inconvenience. The 14 years of cyclic reservist training can be a real disruption to some.
My unit had a major reshuffle and the older reservists had their records lost and ended up doing more reserve training - some up to 20 with years of reserve training. Its possible, you know, from age 20 to 40 is the age of liability for the non officers.
The army is what it really is - a goofed up organisation.

Do you think, just because of the goof up caused by your unit, no one is perfect after all, that you should be allowed to disparaged against the entire organisation?

Disparage against the entire org? did I? where?
I was trying to add another dimension to the debate......sticking to the focus of that words '2 yrs' seems too narrow a debate to me.

And I don't think such goofing up is confined only my unit. It happens in other units too. Albeit, in other forms.
To be fair, I also have this to add. The SAF has over the years improved over many areas - adv to the younger generation of NSmen.

It truly is......but some problems are inherent for a large organisation like SAF.

Precisely.
Have to include private time contributed in training for one's IPPT, going for IPPT(s), if fail, going for RT.
Reservist trainings etc.
Not only 2 years.

you really remind me of the pussycat dolls you know. seemingly an ambassador for feminism, yet only on the grounds that you are capable of child bearing and enduring through pregnancy. at the same time, still flaunting your sexuality for guys to oogle over.
feminists i do have respect for argue that despite their biological differences with men, they are equally as capable leaders and thinkers. some even argue that it is their biological difference that makes them even better leaders and thinkers as compared to men. really, you should not be that superficial.
the undeniable fact is that 2 years of national service stifles a person's development, especially in his youth. it is perhaps out of spite and the demand for "fairness" that has lead to ppl in this thread demanding that women should also serve national service- because the men themselves have realized their growth has been stifled. i myself must plead guilty to that.
on a serious note, getting women to serve NS is unreasonable and unnecessary as well. but history has been more unfair for the male gender in the sense that we HAVE ALREADY wasted our 2 years (or more) in NS, while the debate lingers on about whether women should suffer the same bad fate.
therefore if i were you, i would give men the license to bitch
Off duty Israeli girls.
This is for all those people who are claiming that Israeli female conscripts are not real soldiers because they look tood good while holding a weapon. Like I said, more often than not, their weapon goes almost everywhere with them

Heh who knows!

I believe any regulars who is with SAF indeed is treating it as a job. There's nothing wrong to treat it as a job what. It IS a job. A job that has very much different jobscope as compare to the civillians as well. Besides, most of the regulars, after their years of service will have problem getting second job as the society usually label their experience as not relevant to the society.
So who wants to be in the regular service?
The same kind of hardcases who're in regular militaries all around the world? People are diverse. Some people are just more suited being soldiers. My time in the SAF, I've seen too many regulars who wouldn't last 2 seconds if they were asked to be real soldiers. One needs to understand that soldiering isn't just "a job". It isn't just about passing IPPT every ear and getting nagged by yr ops warrent to go "take yr fucking range already lah sir!". It's more than that.

4sg. I wouldn't bother with xtreyier. He's in a little fantasy bubble of his own. He seems to naively think SAF is top notch and the best and all things nice and wonderful. Those of us who really know and had to endure their bullshit, know better.

Before you say something like this, take a step into other people's shoes and consider that they, unlike you, did not need to pause and think about their next step, and would have gone on to a brighter future sooner if not for NS. For people like them, it CAN be a waste of time.
Yes of course the upside(theres always 2 sides to a coin) is that one experiences a great many things one otherwise never would in civilian life. The downside is ALSO that one experiences a great many things on otherwise never would need to in civilian life.
Ultimately, asI already said, NS is a necessary evil.

Hehehehe. I used to think we're superior.
Toned that down a bit. hehe. I'd say that both men and women can be equally good at leading and thinking.

End of the day, it is only a job, like it or not.
The question you should be probing is whether or not are the regulars dedicated in their job.
If it's not a job, which job has to come with prospect, who like to take up the job?

SAF, Haiz! all weak legs. I think we womenfolks also cannot rely on your guys during war.

Look, you guys can discuss this issue till the cow come home, but without a gal like me to challenge you, as man versus woman, you learn nothing except all the perspective of your man egoistic manifestation.
Therefore, i am here to give you and provide you the insight of what a gal think and look at in term of serving NS. You guys should appreciate my inputs as it broaden your view in the perspective of a gal.
In my opinon, the ideologies of NS given 3 points to ponder
1. to defend the country
2. to inculcate discipline to our boys so that they will not dispel themselves into crimes and anti vices action as most countries boys do at this stage of boy's puberty.
3. to bring about a man of fitness and pride in the eye of his gal.
To be true, the fact the when we gals see a army boy, we are so proud of him and take heart into consideration of his contribution and discipline.
And if he is handsome with crabs or bars on the shoulder, that will be extra value added.
