these two countries can hardly be considered overtly hostile and ideologically irreconciliable to the fact of Sg's existence... in the early days of the 6-Day War and Yom Kippur War, the Arabs fully wanted to push the Jews into the sea... the existence of a Jewish state was totally unacceptable to them.
since when did official circles in Malaysia and Indonesia ever articulate such violent rhetorics about Sg? well DuH they don't always agree with us or like us very much, but wiping us off the map is never an option to them... Konfrontasi doesn't count... Sukarno wanted to wipe BOTH Sg AND Malaysia off the map if he could... and it was hardly comparable to anything that took place in the Middle East... Israel really faced an overt existential threat in those days.
so this "israel of asia" parallel is really shallow, alarmist and crude and only the most superficial and unread individual would actually be tempted to use it to make a shallow and invalid point. -

we give them warning... ask them to leave nicely....
IF they refuse... we fire warning shots.... and tell them to leave OR ELSE.....
IF they still refuse... we shoot and sink their ships... recall our units and see wat malaysia does next...
currently... they aint got much options as to wat they can do.... and as far as singapore is concern... until the ICJ says otherwise... its still singapore island.. singapore water and singapore's right under the UN to defend ourselves from uninvited guess....
problem is... wat will OR CAN mahatir do?? go to war with 70,000 troops against SAF 350,000 troops?? wait malaysia loose johor then they know....

What is the fuss?
All it takes is for our Singapore PM to call the Malaysian PM on the "hot line", and tell Dr M that he will be responsible for any consequences on the high seas, as a result of the raising of the temperatures on the Malaysian side.
All the wild talk on the Malaysian side can easily result in some mad unilateral moves of some hot headed Malaysian to forcibly land on Preda Branca, or ram our Police or Navy Boats - in a Jihad style suicide mission.
Probably the phone call has been made, and explain for the 180 Degree about turn from the Malaysian PM, who now talk about "NOT GOING TO WAR" over this island issue (reported on (Friday 27 Dec)
This happened within 24 hours after he spoke about "short of going to war with Singapore", as there is no other avenues to resolve this issue except to send ineffective protest notes (reported on Thursday 26 Dec).
The phone call could easily have been made on a One-to_One basis between the PM of Singapore and Malaysia; and which allow our PM Goh to confidently say - (on Saturday 28 Dec) - that 'War will not breakout between Singapore and Malaysia over this issue'. -
pleasing your domestic audiences and pleasing your international audiencies are 2 different things. one of these days, these double talk will blow right up in their face. someone must tell them that honesty is always the best policy. manipulating facts to suit their needs is counter-productive in all sense....

is it because a marine police boat is not as big/well armed as a navy ship. therefore it is perceived as less hostile? secondly, there might be a perception that police is used for internal security purposes and the armed forces for external....by using the navy as a messager, we are sending a very hostile message indeed.....

what i think is, it is unlikely for any ONE incident to trigger a war all of a sudden.
it would almost certainly be the result of a series of gradual escalation. face it: both sides have too much to lose and there will be doves trying to resolve the problem before the problem gets out of hand.
but of late, the sudden resurgence of one issue after another in rapid succession and sometimes, concurrently is dangerous indeed... if linkages are ever drawn between unresolved issues, it could easily get out of hand since both sides might decide that it has more to lose by compromising on several issues it perceives as its vital interests or sovereignty all at once.
IF for instance, the island affair, the water dispute and the air-space issues ALL flare up at once, it would indeed be a dangerous situation since all three issues touches upon both country's vital interests and inviolable sovereignty...
at at this rate, with M'sia in a reckless hurry to resolve a range of issues which have defeated the best efforts of both foreign ministries and prime ministers for decades, it might actually push tension between the two countries over the edge. -
