Feeling helpless in Singapore. Being poor sucks!

I feel that people from poor families are treated unfairly in Singapore. Especially for us guys. We have to go through army and serve NS. Since the market is bad, finding a perm good job is hard! Imagine that on top of all the trouble of being jobless, the army bothers you by calling you up for reservist.
Thats where all the rich kids got themselves covered.
Being rich their parents can afford them a better environment to nuture them. Most of them go through army halfway as they defer to go study University. The army cannot touch them and their parents pay for their education. After that, they go back to army and do nothing and when they ORD can get a better job because of their degree. For poor people, with only a diploma or less, they have to start at the bottom or even worse. Our pay sucks and even after working many years we might not be able to reach the level of the degree holder. If we study private U, we have to pay ourselves and cannot use our CPF money to do so.
On top of all this grief, we still have all the crap about local ladies being judgemental of us guys. Give me a break and just admit that if the person is poor and lowly educated, he's not worth the time. Spare me the excuses.
Any guys going through similar problems? And girls don't bother to reply! Thank you. -
Rich not equal can go university
Poor not equal only can get diploma
Education gives you advantage is a fact of life
Born in rich family means great advantage is also a fact of life
If you are born in an average family, that means you belong to the majority.
If you are born rich, you are lucky and belongs to the minority.
So, if you always compare to the luckiest people, you always feel being deprived.
If you compare to everyone around, you may realized that you are really in quite a good shape. There are many who do not even have a proper family (I got a friend who's mother is the mistress, and a few who's father left them), some who are born with deformities, some who are born ugly (with birthmark on their face), some who are born poorer than you are (already working since primary school to help supplement family income), some are born with irresponsible dad (Drunk, owes loan shark $$ for gambling) etc etc.... I have many friends who are in each of the above conditions.
So, if you start looking around you, at the less fortunate people, you may realized you are very lucky already. At least you are born without liabilities. As for your future, it is how you want to make it out to be for yourself. -
I am from an above average family, which means i gotta enjoy certain perks in life. But i do understand & agree that being poor is indeed an major disadv in S'pore ...
Maybe cause i have always been an average joe... & wonder where will i be today if not for my parents help.
I did badly in my A levels--- I'm grateful that i can still con't my edu in SIM. But had i been in a family who can't afford the private/oversea sch fees, i may jus hav to start workin
I hav a car, some allowance frm my parents--- I'm rely hopeless at sweet talkin gals etc, so sometimes i rely feel the convenience of being able to drive, bring my date to a restaurant etc
I am workin hard now to imrove my educational as well as financial standing, but i still had to acknowledge that my parents has help to smoothen my path a lot.. -
Yes it sucks.. use this advantage to spur u to attain wat u want in life.. overcome these barriers to become one of the rich... ur fate is up to u.. afterall S'pore practises meritocracy.. wat u do is wat u'll be..

You should visit poorer countries to get a glimpse of what life is about. Besides seeing people who are poorer that you are, you will see people who strive to become successful.
The only person in this world who can make you feel lousy is yourself. If you are not satisfied with where you are right now, then do something about it. If you want to be successful, then you gotta strive for it. -
its just like h3ll for those poor ones,ive suffered once before like you man...and its really hard to get thru it...

if u cant stand being poor then strive had now ..if u cant enjoy the fruit of ur labour then let your son enjoy it .. i believe if hard work iss put in cant be that bad

My dad was very poor - impoverished in post war singapore. He started working from a young age part time after school to get his pocket money while studying hard. He managed to get into university (he worked part time to pay his fees - got up 4 am to start walking to school) . He worked hard all his life and he is doing well .
Any guy worth his salt will try to work his way through the great class divide , instead of whining on the forum. -

Nope... You don't have to be at the TOP for a girl to love you... You just need to be able to make a reasonable living...? That would OF COURSE be SUBJECTIVE to the girl you're interested in.... Every girl has different requirements and demands... If you're not for her, you're just not for her....? LEARN to ACCEPT that....
And... Hope you don't be too bothered by how the girls might see and judge you especially when it's of what you may think as 'unfair terms'...? You ARE who you are and nothing's gonna change that unless you want to...?

heh. Long shot idea. Involve urself with people or high brow friends who do projects u can be a part of and earn $ along the way. Or spend $ to learn SRV and remote view winning lottery numbers

Well I think in life as long as you work hard, your fruits will pay off. Xenthar, you had your chance to do well in school and garner a scholarship. There's countless scholarships around, the common ones PSA, SAF, Police, CDF... But you missed out on all these freebies, just needed to get good grades.
But you can still do well even without a university degree... the chances are slim we all acknowledge that but you just got to work hard at what you're good at.
As for dating girls, you just have to be yourself and be confident about yourself. There are tons of girls out there who aren't materalistic. Just got to meet the right person! Best of luck! Keep your head up -
there is something called rags-to-riches stories. george soros, andrew carnegie etc etc... and besides, you think money falls from the sky? rich people dont get rich just by sitting around. they work damned hard and wreck their brains to come up with money making ideas to keep their business going. donald trumph gets up at 5 every morning and works till late all day to get where he is today. bill gates is a workaholic who spends nearly all of his non-sleeping time on his company. normal workers just sit around waiting for people to tell them what to do, they don't use their brains to come up with ideas on how to make money that's why people work hard all their lives but never get rich, because they're not doing anything to get rich they're just working blindly. some do come up with silly ideas to start small businesses like food stalls but that dosen't get you anywhere, there are hundreds of food stalls with better food and food dosen't really make you a lotta profit. this is where we singaporeans loose out to hong kong and even taiwan economy due to our incompetence at innovation and creativity thats why hong kong has billionaires like li ka shing and singapore? our richest people are all foreign chinese businessmen like malaysian born quek leng beng. so don't go around dissing peple for being rich and sit there and whine while doing nothing. use your brains and you too could succeed.Originally posted by Xenthar:I feel that people from poor families are treated unfairly in Singapore. i come from a poor family myself and am a dip holder
after ns, initially got an IT job, but because pay not really enough to support family, quit and got into a government job instead.
3 years down the road, and financially become more stable, i left my government job and got a level-entry IT job and had pay cut.
But i have never put the blame on anyone, that my parents not be able to provide me with U education. In fact i feel good about myself. No doubt i started to work in IT field 3-4 years later than my sch peers, I am quite certain i'll be able to catch up with them.

if you don't, trust me, you are considered rich in singapore!
wat girls are looking for is a healthy cash flow. under that healthy cash flow, u wouldn't have a CLUE whether the person is really rich or not until u check out his DSR (debt servicing ratio, the amt of debt he has wrt to his income), and of course if he has no debt at all, then that's the best, everything he owns, is HIS. (or hers...)
so we can have someone who owes the world say $100,000 but earns 6k a month. his cash flow is 6k in, 4k out, 2k to debts, for instance. compare that with someone else (you perhaps) with 0 debt, 1k in, 800 out, 200 to savings.
wat the girls see is the 4k out from the first guy, compared to your 800 out a month. of course to the girls, the first guy rocks. but which position would u rather be?
just a disclaimer, some of you might argue that the 100k of debt is in assets. think again, property is dropping, cars are NOT an asset, and more pple are losing in the stock market than earning, becos pple are gambling, not investing.
girls, if you really are a gold digger, perhaps this might help u choose ur rich man wisely too. not that i encourage gold digging. -

Well I have no debt whatsoever. Anyway those people you are describing sound more like those idiots with a bit of money adn who think they are very rich. True rich people with millions do not usually end up with this can of idiotic financial mistake. As for your advice to girls. forget it dude. Why else you think they go for guys with cars etc even if the money was sponsored by his parents. You know why I prefer them to come clean, at least I feel better that day. If you make ur fortune - there is always someone else who have more than you (unless you are bill gates). Sometimes those people who treat you like shit have connections you need- you just don't know.
If I have a large fortune - I would not bother about repaying people for the past. They did not hurt my family . They only hurt my pride. Then again pride is a dangerous thing to have. I would rather use the money to help out the more unfortunate: When you are in a position where you can dole out a bit of fairness, you do so. -
