Why do guys call a girl "dear" when she is not his girlfriend or wife???

yah loh, i also dun understand.. last time my gal fren also call her guy fren (not bf) dear.. then we ask her y she just say cos' that guy called her dear...
i also dun understand y some "frens" can hold hands when they are not couple.. -
perfectly ok wat...
it's juz an expression...does not relli have to refer to wife or gerfren..
i oso dun understand why some ppl (like u 2 above) cannot understand tt these are normal stuff...no need to da jing xiao guai about...
mebe is becos different values..but tt does not mean im cheap and u are conservative...i guess it's diff ppl's comprehension on such things.... -

It's in our culture lah. Chinese are less open about people calling them dear because it might mean something special like "Qing Ai de". Western culture much different, they call everybody, dear, love, darling... I call people dear too. Nothing wrong with that ... just an expression. The REAL question is ... how come i see girls holding hands and its 'normal'. While guys holding hands is not 'normal'. This has got me stumped.

Agree ney...chinese are more conservative compared to the westerners, though there are more chinese who is opening up. I once volunteered in a rotary convention & most of them are the Ang-Mos'. They are really sincere when they call me 'Dear', it makes me feel really warm in the heart. Hmm...got to depends on the culture & the person who says it out. Hmm..agree with joanne..really not use to it, I can't even say it out, so replace wif other things lor...feel a bit awkward even though call bf dear... but sometimes practice make perfect. -
got a few ang mohs in my class...
they seldom call me dear unless they want "something" in return....such as want to copy my notes or borrow my pen...hee~

From my point of view, i guess i only call two girls other then my gf as dear. Why? Depends on your understanding of each other, the foundation and openness of the relation you have wif them.
These 2 gals are close to me and are special in some ways as compared to my other fwends. They hold back nothing from me and share a lot of their darkest secrects wif me. So the dear in this usage does have a different meaning from the dear i address my gf. -
It is just but a form of speech... does it makes a difference? It is not as if it is an exclusive word in its own right.. u can call anione on the street dear and they would probably treat you like a lunatic..
Seriously, it is not wat you say but wat u tink and feel about it that counts..

Bcoz "Dear" oso means "Expensive". So when a friend keeps ordering Ex stuff in restaurant, our subconcious mind will make us say "Dear". We are actually toking abt de $$.
but of coz, de other friend will think he/she means so much to u and keep orderin' more. kekeke....the psycho expert has answered. -
Acutally, mi thinks that guy and guy hugg|z is alright lehz... nothing really wrong lorz.. coz guys need hugg|z also one mahz.. but hold hands it will mean you're guy lorz... got this group of friends who we will hugg|z each other before we go.. be it boy or girl, or even 12 yrs old to 21, that's me. Know them from a camp and from there we are taught to give people hugg|z... Even people see us hugg|z each other, they will think it's okiez. coz everyone in the group is doing it. Still hugg|z is just a form of expression.. not really a big deal.. Besides we need 14 hugs a day to be satisfy our emotional needs. It's a stress reliever... anyway nothing wrong with calling other people dear also mahz... Me also call other people "my dear" and sometimes I also use it in some of my posts in this forum... Got a qin qie gan especially amongst friends...

Just wondering why no one call 'lao gong' 'lao po' liaoz... used to remember when I was in sec sch.. it was pretty common... but that was like 6-7 yrs back... all become more ang mo liaoz?? hahaha~
