I want to spend it on downpayment but my gf wanna spend it on wedding dinner.

the lease is just 99 years.. after which teh govt owns the flat.. and value would start goin down after it steps into its 70th year.... -
or get the house first, then when save enough money again, go for the dinner

Eh...I thought value starts going down once you buy it cos flat is always depreciating?? Someone told me the only way flat values go up is by privatisation..

eh~ i think you should go for the hse. its heartwarming to build your nest with your loved one.
after all, a dinner is just meant for others to enjoy & some pple you didnt even really know. the actual day itself would be so hectic and you might not even get to sit down and relax.
communicate to your gf abt it. perhaps you can bring her for a romantic holi instead. rather than spurlging on the wedding dinner. -

No need to splurge 25k on dinner. Ang Bao these days depends coz economy still not so good so you might not make on it.
Anyway I think it is a good idea for flat because the pre-payment is increasing by the year. -

choco B i will pay the rest using my monthly CPF..wont affect my monthly saving much and both of us are working anyway...
the man who was death, my gf told me the same thing..but i found out a table for 10 person during the wedding dinner cost $500 to $600++.....
I really hope the $ can be use for down payment and furniture........

Once in a lifetime is a whole load of bull to me... There's so much more to do than throw a big dinner & hafta chat wif pple/relatives I dunno & feel uncomfy wif.
If it's once in a lifetime, then I'd rather be comfy & haf thgs fun.

Actually I think unless you have the spare cash to blow, don't bother wasting it on a dinner. It is a hassle and a waste of money on relatives you hardly know or talk to anyway. If you really want a dinner, have a small one with close relatives. Friends, you can have a fun chalet bbq.
I am a girl and I don't want a dinner but my husband wants one. We have not gone through the customary rites yet but I think we spent too much on our ROM already. We have already paid for the downpayment for the flat and is currently thinking on how to renovate the place.
Btw, tell your gf that a dinner is no where romantic. You will be busy entertaining the guests and too tired for anything else at the end of it. If you decide on a dinner be prepared to treat it like a treat for everyone. -

HDB flat is not worth investing your money into...but a freehold house in JB will at least provide you with a roof over your head for generations...your generations.

Waah ... touchy topic. I would say it depends on how badly your girl wants to have the dinner. Must it be sitdown 10 course type? Can go for nice romantic "under tent" type buffet for close relatives and friends. You will get money back from hongpows - may not be the entire sum spent but chances are you will not 'lose' much. I know some people who actually received more than they paid out for the dinner.
At the end of the day, it's how both of you compromise since you're starting a life together. Some gals have memories like elephants. If the dinner is something she really wants, even if she gives in to you and forgoes the dinner, for the REST OF YOUR LIFE she will be making comments about how you were so cheapskate and insensitive to her feelings that you didn't even want to give a simple dinner to celebrate your lifelong reunion. Your kids may get to hear the sorrowful tale too. It won't matter if the flat you invest in makes a profit if property prices soar during your lifetime and you upgrade to a high class apt
Give and take alittle at both ends ... that's what a lasting successful marriage is going to have to be built on, right?
