skhoo, perhaps your efforts are not working because you are focusing on the wrong thing. When you work too hard to go after a girl, when she senses that you're coming on too strong with desperation written on your forehead, she may just feel intimidated, avoid you, and end up with someone else who makes her feel less uncomfortable.
If you define 'lonely' as not having any girlfriend, then your definition may be a bit skewed. Rather than focusing on finding girlfriends, why not just go easy on yourself and focus on making friends instead? Be yourself, find some friends with common interest, hang out and relax with them -- with the right attitude you shouldn't feel lonely anymore.
And probably when you least expect it, there'd be someone special waiting round the corner. -

If your current pre-occupying goal is to establish a relationship with a girl, then you're apt to feel lonesome.
But if your goal is other than establishing a relationship, loneliness will cease to be a problem.
For instance, you will be wet, if you take a bath or a swim. Unless your choice of activity is neither, you will remain dry. -
There are so many other things to do than dwelling on the fact that you do not have a girlfriend. I'm sure you have other friends, right? You will not be lonely, unless you choose to be.
Don't think so much. I totally agree with the idea of improving yourself and let the gals chase you. Cheer up! Nobody wants to be with a sulking guy.
