engineering.
you can be an engineer and read books or take part-time courses to learn economics. also it is about real life.. so it is not too difficult.
you cannot do an econs degree and read books on engineering to know/practice engineering.
engineering is more specialised...
engineering also makes more money for a start but at the rate technology changes, you may become redundant after some years if you do not upgrade yourself or if what you learnt is out-dated/taken over by some other innovative technology making yours redundant.
econs in this way is a sure-win.... the theories will always be the same. alot more variety of options are also option for you... banking, stockbroking, investments, etc.
ultimately depends what you want in life. -

Lol.. Not exactly true.. I am studying Computer Engn. And I am reading up books on finance and stuff. I agree completely with nuchio. Engineering is something too specialised for you to study by urself. Be a doctor.. seriously.. If you take engineering, your company will eventually replace you with a cheaper, talent engineer from overseas..
If you take economics.. not sure about the prospects but from what I heard its just a general degree??
None of the degrees have a good future.. the only one of guaranteed rice bowl is to become a doctor..

But dear friend being a doctor isn't easy man.. First of all you need to get excellent grades to make it there. Then its a 5 year course and its very very expensive. Not many families can take up that kinda financial burden.
But of coruse it can reap very well.
And they don't replace u with an overseas guy just like that. If you prove that you can perform well, be a leader, motivate your team members and set an example they will be more then glad to pay u higher bonuses and probably give you promotion.. Yep..
My results were good but not good enuough to be a doctor. Even if they were I wouldn't even think of taking Doctor man.. Just not my cup of tea. -
If you want to study economics, you have to aim high, very high and work towards a Masters or PhD in Public Policy or Finance.
