Why are people still racist?

  How come stereotypes still exist today, in a globalised world?
  Instead of seeing a common identity as singaporeans, we still see chinese indian, malay and eurasian. Why why why? this saddens me greatly.

  I hate it when i see people holding their nose without discretion when standing near indian people! As a chinese i feel ashamed on how fellow humans can be so thoughtless to other ppl's feelings Many times on crowded trains even if got spare seat but it is next to an indian, nobody take! Sometimes i purposely sit to show show moral support for the indian

  although sterotypes are over-generalizations
  
  we use characteristics that distinguish one person to another.
  and e most obvious and easiest way to distinguish is via skin colour. (automaticity: there is no thought processes..it jus happens)
  
  you cant stop stereotyping to occur, but u can break e vicious cycle (on relating those thoughts that links to certain races) = controlled thought processes.

  Because the govt still insists on putting the "Race" options in forms.
  
  Where in the US do they have forms asking you for your Race.

  Unfortunately, it also has to do with a person's upbringing. If you keep telling your children to despise other races, be it tacitly or openly, chances are that they'll end up following your actions and thoughts.
  
  For example, if you tell you children to not mix with Indians because they're 'smelly', Malays because they're 'lazy', or Chinese because they're 'devious', then it's not surprising if your children will think that that's acceptable behaviour and grow up to be racist bigots.
  
  My father has often shown disapproval when he sees me hanging around with my Chinese peers (I'm Malay). Once for Racial Harmony Day I prepared my spare set of baju kurung for one of my Chinese friends to wear to school. When he saw me doing that, he sneered at me, "Why on earth are you doing that?!?! What's so great about these Chinese anyway?!?!"
  
  I brought it to school anyway and lent it to my friend.
  
  That was one of the few times that I am actually glad to defy my father.

  the world is not as globalised as you imagine; there are distinctive divisions between races no matter how we try to dissolve it. its only the matter of respecting other races' individuality or disrespecting that differences.

  I agree.
  key word is 'the world'.
  no matter how developed that country.
  don't just focus on singapore only.
  occasionally take a look at developments in neighboring Malaysia and Indonesia,
  because they may have some impact on us

  chinese fight always get caught by police

  malay no money like to act got money
  indian no money but work hard to earn money
  chinese no money and lazy to earn money

  Indians are not smelly, they jus smell different . To them, we may smell funny too, but we do not see them making faces at us! Most important is not to make those rude hurting faces at them like nose pinching etc. They are not animals but human with blood with tears Once i saw a chinese pinching his nose and telling an indian worker repeatedly : u so smelly! U so smelly! I was so pissed off i turned to him(the chinese),pinched my nose and say: you also very smelly leh uncle!

  i think that if we are true to ourselves, we will all admit to being racist... no matter how tiny, all of us have that trait, your upbringing will determine how you deal with it.

  i wont pinch my nose when indian sit beside me... i just breath with my mouth....unless someone farts and it stinks den i will cover my nose
  anway last time i primary sch tat time, my tuition teacher is indian, i always go his house for tuition de... so i sort of seasoned liao....
