Would u not agree with me, for every lazy malay and indian with BO, u have 5 chinese with the same problems....(due to the large population proportions)... -

I am a Buddhist, and Buddhism originated from India, so I have nothing against Indians... However, I am also not used to their body odour... Its not a matter of personal cleanliness, it is a matter of dietary habit!
When the US sent in their force recon marines deep behind enemy lines during the Vietnam war, they actually isolated the troopers for a month, during which the soldiers are required to subsist only on plain vegetarian diet. The strories goes that the NVA can actually smell the Americans otherwise...
I will not shun away from an empty seat in a MRT, nor will I pinch my nose. However, I will admit that I do not like the body odour, and I might discreetly cover my nose (pretending to rub my nose) for a while to take an occasional breath-break. -
Stereotyping is what I see in the people discussing this thread. Maybe itÂ’s because of the surrounding that affected our thinking. The things that people of different race do portray the way we think about them.
Take my race, Chinese, as example. Why in Singapore, people do not call notorious hooligans gangster, but instead they call them “Ah Beng” or “Ah Seng” or “Ah Lian”? Does that sound like Malays or Indians’ names to you? The answer is no, because we got used to seeing Chinese gangster, with hot streak golden hair, hanging around doing nonsensical acts and naturally we’re lead to the thinking that “Ah Beng” are Chinese who always gets into fights.
Why do people say Indians smells? Go to Little India. I can greatly assure that 9 out of 10 non-Indian Singaporean will find the place stinky. But what can we do about it? If you can take it (the smell), good, go ahead and stay. Else walk away without any sign or gesture indicating that “Hey! You smell! Get outta here!”
Why do people have the thinking that Malays are lazy? I suggest you that a look around your neighborhood, especially under the void decks and the parks. Who do you see on those benches and slacking?
Sometimes if you have a thinking that affects the entire surrounding, my suggestion would be to best keep it in your heart. =)

Hmmm.... i guess i see ur poit... as a member of a minority, i have to admit.. when chinese burn their stuff all around the neighbourhood its very annoting.. when they spit all over the place.. it bugs me... when they speak in chinese in the presence of other races in a group is very rude.... when they pass remarks about other races it infuriating. I guess its all the way people live.
I Dont expect the way people live their lives to change. These are all petty issues. It does not bug me if a yellow man calls a brown man balck. Thats stupidity...
What annoys me is that when it comes to issues like emplyment, race plays quite a significant factor. It is most evident from the eyes of a minority. -
I remember there was once this aunty on the MRT... The case above was like.. They really didn't have any smell at all...? I don't know, but some people might really be so much more sensitive than me in terms of smelling? (though I regard my own sense of smell to be pretty sharp)
But have you smelled before..? Chinese people can have smells too.. Body odours which ain't any more present... Somehow I just take it to their own personal hygiene (in some cases), while others they're just quite helpless to the situation they're in.... -
its true that some indian smell, but i also experience the "aura" of some smelly chinese lor... their sweaty smell is just unbearable

It is easier said than done. I am not saying it is impossible, but that it takes time. For such integration to be successful, you must first encourage tolerance, not only of other races/ cultures and religions, but of ideas a well.
We shouldn't write somebody's opinion off because it touches a taboo topic or that it is merely politically incorrect. Doing so will actually backfire as it merely forces potential issues down to fester, instead of bringing these issues to the surface to be resolved.
Of course there is a difference between a politically incorrect opinion expressed in good faith, versus a maliciously seditious opinion designed only to incite religious/ racial hatred. The former should be thrashed out, the latter simply thrashed. -
The thing with breeding tolerence is that it pushes discussion of racial issues out from the open. It pushes the seed of racism (lack of understanding) deeper within individuals and hence society.
To be tolerent does not mean being understanding.. it mean u have to supress ur actual feelings, pushing them into regression while putting on a smile. Its ignoring the problem rather then solving it.
Tacit msgs of hate will be passed on from father to son in homes. Explicit acts of racism will not blatently be displayed, utill an opportunity presents itself.
The thing is.. the policy of tolerence is a time bomb. It tells people to see the lines that define race and stay witin ur own boundaries. It does not tell u to integrate as a people " regardless of race, religion or colour" It breeds seprate identities. Not one identity. The Army works cuz sections and teams build one identity. Same with any good team.
Singapore with the government's current attitude towards race is a ticking bomb. -
I agree with headset's views.
But i believe that no matter what we say, how much we try to educate people, change their mindsets, blah blah blah.. there will always be people who are racists and stereotypes.
Like the saying, there must be evil for there to be good.
Its these racists, we see everyday that make us appreciate people who are not racists, people who understand the world the way WE do. People who INTEGRATE and not TOLERATE.
Im Hindu and my girlfriend is Muslim btw. Integration.
