In a macro-view, it's unrecommended and unethical for step into a relationship and be a third party.
However, looking at a micro-perspective, it depends on circumstances such as the girl may have some liking for you. Their relationship is rocky due some reason such as she was ill-treated or taking for granted.

the part abt the emotional strain very true. me losing a lot of sleep over her and i dun want her to feel too presurerize also just being extra nice and caring towards her.

If you love someone, its not abt keeping her by your side. Both of you are seeking for happiness, can you give her the kind of happiness she's seeking for? Pessimistic way of looking at it, this gal may not be the one ur looking for (she might 2-timed you) at the end of the day. At the first place, if she's the loyal type, she shldnt have be so involvedwith you behind his current bf (of course unless her current bf failed her).
