Though I already have a place waiting at NTU in a similar course, I've got an eye on studying design at a good university in Sweden. Though it means I have to find a way to understand Swedish, what appeals to me is that the course is a year shorter than what's offered here and cheaper than other overseas options. Did me sums and it's not much more expensive than the local route.
I just proposed this to my parents and my father wonders if I'm mad. "Be practical, how are you going to become proficient in such a short time?" And mum's already says there's no way she'll allow it to happen (her son can't ever be out of arm's reach). Both of them suspect that it's a move to get closer to my other half who lives in country close by.
Right now I'm still pissed off...when will they let go?! It's not as if I won't make friends who'll help me out with the bits I don't understand. It's happened before when I talk about even Australia and England but I want the exposure in another country. A letter of acceptance would be a great compliment - yet I'm even given a chance to try!
Disappointed and lost...that sums up my feelings. -

Go for it, if u're sure u can grasp the language quickly. It can be done..
While studying in Australia, I came across many International students who arrived with almost zero knowledge of english. Those I made friends with had varying success with the new language 3 years later. 1 of them still couldn't string a proper sentence together in english, while another took to it like a duck to water.. she sounds 100% Aussie now. -.-"
The main obstacle now would be to convince your parents to fund your studies. After they do, all you gotta do is perform.. and years later, they'll most likely be telling everyone they come across of your achievements

I wonder, as u are in NS now, if u could take up a Swedish lang course now and prove to them that you can make it on your own. Then again its not like Swedes don't speak English as well... -

In all fairness it is your parents who are sponsoring you and have the right to know whether you can indeed be proficient in the language in time to come. Its not unheard of that Singapore do send scholars to germany or japan (and these chaps can't speak a single native word then) to do a graduate degree. The scholars will spend a year to learn the language and familiarise themselves. I know a few of them doing rather well after that.

with passion you can do it, but clearly you should be happy that your parents showered you with love. Of course if $$$ is not a problem, an overseas education will be good seeing that everything is going global.

Try taking up some courses now.
But I feel that the language bit is just a sham, because they probably are not ready to let you go.. -

Talk to your parents about why they did what they did. Parents are humans, they have their fears, their worries, their insecurities. Perhaps they fear you may leave them one day, but that would be inevitable.
Well, have a good talk and propose/ally their fears and worries. Sooner or later they have to accept reality and let you go. -
Don't go to Sweden!
The food there is fatty, greasy or artificial. -

im planning to study in germany..and im currently learning german.i had a friend who studied in canada and spain.(in spanish)..and he graduated with a degree in language(spanish)...so everything is possible.quick go learn swedish now!

Presume you know your second language (be it Malay, Tamil or Chinese) better than Swedish at the moment. Suppose you are to do a similar design course in your second language...do you feel confident enough to handle it? If you are not, what chance do you have of doing it in Swedish?
If you are, you must factor in a year of language classes. It also depends on the nature of your studies. It is one thing to study a technical subject such as mathematics or engineering in a foreign language, but if your course requires you to make oral presentations in Swedish, that's a different matter.
Guess you need to convince your parents you have considered all the implications and yet certain that you can do it. If you have a government scholarship (which proves that the funding agency believes you can do it), I doubt your parents will object. -
I believe you have to overcome your language barrier first. It's like parachuting. You do not jump out of a plane as and when you feel like it. You need preparation.
So, what I can suggest to you is this: Be proficient in Swedish before you go there to take your course. More importantly, be aware of the culture there so that you enjoy your stay over there. -
Does the Swedish university in mind have a preparatory/immersion course for foreign students? Perhaps sign up for that ... longer time spent studying may be worth your while in the end.

If so, I can understand why they dun want u to go.
How long is the whole course?
Well, if I were you, of course I would want to get more exposure and study overseas. However, I will spare a thought for my family first.
If the course offered here and over there do not have much difference, then maybe u might want to consider again?
Sometimes in life, we have to give up something that we really want.. but dun look at it as a 'missed opportunity'. Look at it at the postive light, it's not a bad thing to stay here, you still have your family and friends here with you.
I know of people who study overseas and really miss home a lot. After you come back, you might find that most of your friends have disappeared or lost touch with you. It's not going to be easy at a new environment. You know u have to pick up a new language, and adapt to the new environment.
I feel like telling you to 'follow your heart' so that you will not have regrets in future. However, I think we always have to spare a thought for our parents also, especially if they are already old..and children are not with them, they will be constantly thinking of that child in another part of the world. Can you leave with a peaceful mind like that?
