Thanks for the input so far, everyone. I haven't broached the subject again since that night.

Guess you need to convince your parents you have considered all the implications and yet certain that you can do it. If you have a government scholarship (which proves that the funding agency believes you can do it), I doubt your parents will object.
I've had a look at the government scholarships offered before, and industrial/product design's not something any of them cover. Besides, what use would it serve in the civil service...

Well, if I were you, of course I would want to get more exposure and study overseas. However, I will spare a thought for my family first.
If the course offered here and over there do not have much difference, then maybe u might want to consider again?
Sometimes in life, we have to give up something that we really want.. but dun look at it as a 'missed opportunity'. Look at it at the postive light, it's not a bad thing to stay here, you still have your family and friends here with you.
Maybe I'm mistaken, but I have the impression that immersing myself in a different culture will enrich me. The exposure to a different sort of mindset is important to me, and maybe even in my ideal job, something I would forgo my comfort zone for. And
Umeå have offering this for a lot longer than our universities - doesn't that count too?
(Yup, that's the BA course I'm eyeing)
