Just wanna clear some thoughts...
Intend to get ROM-ed with my g/f in July(tentively) 07
planning a ROM cum Solemnisation Lunch reception, decided not to have the chinese dinner, too much of a hassle.
And with all the Guo Da Li and all the nitty gitty stuff...
How much do i need??? Really interested to know if i actually got enough to pull it off...
Can advice me??

Depends on which restaurant you want and how many people actually going.
Would you want to do the chinese 'tea ceremony' on that day? need the gal to change into a cheongsum?
If need parents to accept the teas. You might also want to budget for them to be wearing nice clothes and give them some spare cash to buy you and wiffey some good pretty golds trinkets to be placed in Angbaos.
Chinese Guo Da Li
Depends on the dialects of both you and her family.
Can get the restaurant to provide the suckling pig, or you can just buy cans of pig trotters, oranges & stuffs which your parents want and have them standby in your car for that lunch. And of cos, that S$ angbao to her family. They may or may not return you some S$ angbao.
And err.....chinese wedding biscuits. Need to order early, so you guys need to work out a budget, sit down with the parents and discuss thier needs, wants, demands and negotiate to what you can afford
It really depends on you. There are some of us who did this below S$500/- to S$2k -

like ur ROM Solemnisation lunch reception at where?some hotel/restaurant or just get caterer to set up something at ROM itself?How many people do U have to invite?if U need external help in getting ur preferred date and time for the ROM...would have to pay more...
transport?if U sign ROM package with bridal company...see if they provide transport...if not U have to see how many people are going...then decide on how to arrange transport....mrt?bus?cab?rent car?
Guo Da Li depends on both ur gf and ur dialect group. si dian jin and other jewels can range from 2.5K onwards depending on what and how much U buy.
U decided not to have chinese dinner...but have U formally discussed it with ur gf and both ur parents(2 fathers,2 mothers)?
somemore U intend to take wedding photos(studio) or not?if yes then have to find ur bridal shop...choose gown...fix appt for hairdo,makeup and photo-shoot...if got outdoor shoot...have to fix earlier date in case of rain...U still have time...choosing and developing of photos also take time...and normally...the number of pictures that U want is more than the number offered in ur wedding package...so might have to pay more for the additional photos...prepare emm....additional 1.5K for it -
can be cheap cheap one.
no wedding gown or nice dress, just normal clothes; lunch reception jsut those catering buffet lunches. total less than 500 bah

Yes, Have talk too and decide that the Chinese Wedding dinner will not be held..
So the "actual day" will be the ROM cum soleminasation together at a hotel. (thinking poolside)
So morning will go fetch the bride and head over to the hotel for the ROM thingy and also "jib cha" to the elderlys...
That's what we have in mind...
I'm a teochew and my g/f is a hokkien. Anything regarding the "Guo Da Li" and other tradition customs i should know, before those "san gu lu po" of my mum or relatives starts to give/suggest some insane ideas...

Suggest both your moms decide on a shop selling those traditional marriage stuff to go to
Arrange a date, get both you and your gf, mom and her mom (and whichever aunties are involved) down to the shop
Ask the seller what is the right proecdure to do / things to buy
Discuss and decide once and for all on what should be done, then buy the stuff
A warning... everyone will have a different idea of "how it should be done" when it comes to GDL, but what counts is what the 2 moms expect and are given... so better to let them meet, discuss and confirm what they want...

The Guo Da Li is usually done before the wedding date.
Keep to the basics since both of you different dialects. Set your budget 1st so its also easier for the parents to decide and work on. Anything extra, then its up to them to supplement if they so want those stuffs.

Basket of oranges
Ang Bao Money to the Brides mother.
'Si Dian Jing' 4 pc jewellery. (Different dialect, different giver so you guys need to work out who to give.)
Some jewellries, not akin to 'si dian jing'. This is extra, some dialect will give to bride to signify engagements. (This, you also will have to work out how.)
Wedding Invitations. Since you dont have dinner, then find out how many cards are needed and thus send to them.
There is some families that like to give toothbrush, Bowls and such. This you might want to budget with the mothers to know. -

going back to ur preparations...poolside ROM....so have to go find ur hotel and see what package they provide and see if it fits ur idea and budget...for hotel package...most likely they will include a nite's stay in the hotel for U...just have to make sure U count the number of people that U are going to invite.some hotels also give free invitation cards for those wedding dinners so I dunno if they do it for wedding receptions...U can check it out when U source for ur hotel.
and I presume U know U have to register for marriage at ROM website 3 months before the actual day and look for a licensed solemniser for the ceremony itself and be in touch with him/her throughout the 3 months.
There are also some protocols to follow(such as U need to invite the solemniser URSELF) regarding the solemniser so go to the ROM website and read. -

I agree the new designs wans are ugly. But then, no one actually wears it! Just buy the cheapest package lah....those fat fat ones but are hollow inside ones are good enough. Its only for photo taking and pretend pretend to be rich.
BTW, avoid those white gold, platinum or diamonds stuff. They are really not worth a cent.

tailor-making is an idea...but then U dunno how good is their workmanship...and if U really tailor-make...U have to take it even if U find the design ugly...so I didnt like this idea but its up to threadstarter lar...
err....the pawn part....hope I wouldnt have to do it ever...but since we are on this...dragon and phoenix bangles with carvings are normally done on pure gold...916 gold is too hard to carve nicely. -

Straight after the Solemninsation and the "Jin Cha" ceremony.
But after some initial calculation...both sides(me and g/f) have guests adding up to around 180 odd people...
So my concern is will it be a chaotic situation???
You guys think is it Do-able???
Anybody have any similiar experience?

180 people means only 18 tables(10 per table)...small small only lar...can do....U should see those people having 20...30...40 tables one...look nice...number big big...but then I find it no meaning lor...most of the time U also dunno who U invited just to make up the number...waste time waste effort...most likely waste money too.Originally posted by ~Numb~:Thanks for all the valuable add ons...

after ceremony...all go take food...find table sit down and eat...eat finish then go shake hand and go?I think U need to provide some entertainment for ur guests lor...if not it would be super boring...
