I tink you are suffering from "negative comparison" syndrome. The more you are concerned about this, the deeper the pit you are falling into.Originally posted by Cystaire:I am a life scientist trainee.
I entered the field a few years before gahmen announce the life science program, so I am not one of the followers.
I suffer from stupidity. Why? Because no matter how much I've read there is always somebody much clever.
I suffer from laziness. Why? Because if I can work until 12 midnight, there is always someone who can work until 3am.
When the world is your competitor, I ask you how can anyone NOT be stupid and lazy?
1. No matter how hard you study, there will indeed always be someone better than you. If that makes you stupid, then I would say that the whole world is stupid since there's someone else who's always better than each of us.Originally posted by Cystaire:I am a life scientist trainee.

Take note from Fudgester's comments about what you assume other people seems to be "more" than you.Originally posted by fudgester:1. And if the whole world's stupid, then you are not stupid.
It's just like if the whole world consists of superhumans, then no one is superhuman.
2. Likewise, no matter how hard you work, there will always be someone who works harder than you.
And for all you know that guy who works till 3am might be doing so because he's less efficient than you are.
Cheers.

Just to add on, Cystaire:
Why do you want to compete against all the other trainees? In the end, all of you have a common goal, that is, to work in life sciences. Stop seeing it as a competition and start seeing it as a mutual effort towards a common goal. Instead of competing and comparing yourself against others, why don't you just focus on trying to improve yourself?
Forget about trying to be someone else. Just focus on being a better Cystaire.
To sum it all up: the enemy is not out there. The enemy is within yourself.
You are the only one who can truly stop yourself from becoming a better person.
I am, however, aware of the reality in mechanical engineering.Originally posted by Cystaire:Thanks for your comments, but you are not aware of the reality in science.![]()
My friend you are NOT aware of the reality of mechanical engineering.Originally posted by fudgester:I am, however, aware of the reality in mechanical engineering.
Here, it's cut-throat competition between the mechanical engineering undergrads. Here, if you're not an honours student then you're technically below average. There are people who would actually refuse to help others because they see them as 'the enemy'.
I refuse to engage in such behaviour; I see my fellow undergrads as people who share a common goal as I do. For every imbecile who thinks that everyone else is a potential enemy, I know of others who would willingly share and help each other.
For goodness' sake... stop comparing yourself to others already. Don't try to be someone else; just focus on being a better Cystaire. I don't try to be this bugger who gets CAP 5.0 or this guy who gets into the Dean's List every semester; I just try to be a better Fudgester.
If everyone else zigs, then you should zag. If everyone else sees each other as enemies, then you should start seeing them as friends.
I've said it once; I'll say it again:
THE ENEMY IS NOT OUT THERE. THE ENEMY IS WITHIN YOURSELF.
