Sydney is the financial capital of Australia. Melbourne is the tourism capital of Australia.Originally posted by ibanana:thanks Folks for all the kind advice and your time. I appreciate it.
I'm sort of attracted by Melbourne's tours to outlying places such as Ocean road, Philips Island which takes me out of city busy-ness. But well, part of the reason i'm in a dilemna is also the air tickets now for Chinese New Year season is about $300 more than usual.
Sydney on the other hand is about same price as usual times.
Putting price aside. I get mixed feedbacks.
From the research i've done, Melbourne seems to have more things to see beyond just city and shopping.
However, from tour agents and the 4 friends i know all raved about Sydney and said Melbourne not as exciting.
SO, confused confused.
Ok I stay in both Sydney and Melbourne before, so can tell you more about it.Originally posted by ibanana:thanks Folks for all the kind advice and your time. I appreciate it.

GO MELBOURNE!Originally posted by storywolf:Ok I stay in both Sydney and Melbourne before, so can tell you more about it.
Sydney much a larger city with more city stuff, like better resturants, theaters and city stuff. People who say they like it more is people who like city living, those that like harbours, great resturants, theaters and other city stuff. Outside sydney they too have good attraction like wineyard & bluemountains.
Melbourne, is much more of a small city. But I kind of like it better, Sydney maybe big and more city stuff, but it is more messy, and shopping all over the place. When you go there, there is alway time constraint, thus for sydney, with the stuff all over the place, even the things are there, you will not have the time to see much. Melbourne is more organised with things all closer grouped togehter, thus make shopping more fun and fruitful.
Both Sydney & Melbourne offer mountain areas , wineyard and other stuff. But I like melbourne better - as I guess the diverify of the attractions is more and closer distance.
Getting tour in Australia is rather expensive. If you can drive, it is much cheaper to rent a car and drive it yourself and visit more destinations.
i'd say goldcoast, its well furnished i must say with theme parks and tourist attractions.i have gone there 3 times now and i never seem to get bored of it.U could visit water world?,movie world?,dream world?however ive been to sydney where the opera house is(thier version of the esplanade). nothing much really.now i relly feel privellege that i can travel oversea once every year.recently been to vancouver. what can i say?its WHITE christmas.after all it all bows down to you?whether u like the climate and etc.also i think if ur abit wealthier u could go to europe.just a suggestion.Originally posted by ibanana:Hi,
wanna take a trip to Australia.
Can't make up my mind whether to go Sydney or Melbourne.
Did some research....seems that Sydney is more of a city life.
Melbourne, is more of many sub-region attractions such as Philip Island, Ocean Road, etc.
would appreciate advice from those who been to both places before and your recommendation.
thanks Folks for your kind advice.Originally posted by storywolf:Ok I stay in both Sydney and Melbourne before, so can tell you more about it.

Have a look at the following websites and hope that help with your planning.Originally posted by ibanana:thanks Folks for your kind advice.
It really helped me in my travel decision.
Good news is.....after reading your postings and advice, I've just booked myself an air ticket to Melbourne.
I do like the mix of different attractions that Melbourne offers, the Ocean Road, Philip Island, wineyard, etc.
One more question....where's the best area to stay in Melbourne? any recommended hotels? My budget is SGD 150 per night.
Criteria: central, near to major shopping area / tourist attraction / transport.
Preferably a hotel that comes with room broadband (to catch up on my work emails at night), i understand if fee applies.
thanks lots, folks.
You be renting a car or not ? That make a lot of different .Originally posted by ibanana:thanks Folks for your kind advice.

A lot of hotel will not have free car park for you. So if you let me know i can recommend you accordingly.
The best place to look for information on melbourne is http://www.visitvictoria.com
Plan your trip - night shopping for melbourne is thrusday and friday . So plan these night to be shopping at city center. Sunday - do not miss the victoria market & st kilda craft & art market.
Recommend you do the Great Ocean road, Grampians, Yarra Valley, Philip island, Ballarat .
If you want more challanging drive - The great alpine Road . But it is a long drive.
I think 150 asd can get u mostly average hotels but i recommend u if ur going to melbourne u should stay at "the sands" its very very very good. i do recommend it.try looking at thier website first though.Originally posted by ibanana:thanks Folks for your kind advice.
