ideas on getting to know a girl better.

There is this girl at my workplace that caught my attention. I spoke to her once only. Now we would just acknowledge eachother by just smiling to eachother whenever we bump into eachother.
I would like to get to know her better and maybe even progress to being more than friends. If things does not work out, we can still be friends.
How do i approach her saying that i would like to get to know her better or start a conversation with her but also not let her friends tease her about me and her. I do not want to put her in a difficult situation.
Any ideas guys? -

Oh, you misunderstood me. I am not saying she is bothered. I jsut do not want her to be tesed by her friends. I just want it to be just between me and her unless she don mind letting her friends and the people ahe work with know about it.

It's one thing being sensitive to her, but another to accomodate her excessively. go out to eat in a large group then find common topic to talk....

hey, you are positive and considerate! If she is a chinese, perhaps when u see her, you could say "happy lunar new year" to her. If she responds then this will make it easy for you to have small talk with her in time to come. Do it in a spontaneous way, this way the colleagues may not tease her. Or if her colleagues are also around, you could be friendly and say "happy lunar new year" to them, too! -

Err...can just ask her how her job is like, how her new year was, watever. Just be humourous . Or observe wat activities she likes,and err...pretend u like it too ?
