I think in all cases, a person should NEVER give up even when you have stated all the options and conditions. To me, giving up is akin to admiting losing and lose hope in the person or things.
There are some exceptions and different degrees of giving up.
Eg. You and another guy like this gal. Then the gal like the other guy and you know it. At this point you can choose to keep wooing her or '
give up'.
I want you to take note of this part of 'giving up' here. You know the guy like her and she like the guy. So common sense (if there is one) tells you that you should back off and wish them the best of luck here. In here you are giving up on 'wooing' her. You still have not gave up on being her friend or someone who loves her. Loving her as brother/sister or whatever.
My definition of giving up is when I lose TOTAL hope and faith in that person or something. What is described in the example is only changes and rearrangement. Or compromising if you like.
So from my stand, its NEVER give up.
