Your friend from a rich family, is deprived of attention.
1. She is self-mutilating for attention. Although it is the wrong kind of attention, but it still gets her the apathetic attention.
There are people out there who craves attention and will do crazy things to themselves or their children to get attention. Seek professional help.
2. Do not let her attention seeking stunt ruin your relationship with your girlfriend. Let another female counsellor deal with her. Be a friend, not a spoon feeder.
3. Get her involve with volunteer work. Help out at nursing home, childrens home, animal shelter or any needy organisation. This will help with her self esteem and take her mind off the need to self inflict harm.
4. Don't know true value of money is a disease for rich kids. They will have a hard time adjusting when they finally get out to work in the society. They may not need to work, but it will in turn deplete their self worth because they have no goals or directions in life.
Her parents probably knows of her attention seeking stunt, she is probably a difficult/rebellious kid at home that's why her parents are impartial to her behavior.
I suggest you try not to be too emotionally attached, or she may pull you down into the depth of her self inflicted depression. -

Your actions may be out of friendly concern.
BUT it is also known as ENABLING.
You are validating to her that her actions will get the kind of reaction she wants.
You are validating to her that as long as she continues to mutilate herself, she will have someone caring for her and paying attention to her.
You are validating to her that, this IS the way to fulfill her emotional needs.
Stop Enabling.
Ask yourself, how long can you continue this "taking care" of her business?
When will it end ?
If you stop giving her this attention will she start mutilating her self all over again ??
Quit playing the game and get her some professional help instead.
