the key thing is to predict/read your gf's mood like stock market, football or whatever you are into...
here's one romantic suggestion:
while holding her hand and strolling home one night, when the mood is correct, the moon is high up there, and nobody's around..
when she seems to be calm and untroubled by anything,
stop abruptly, turn to face her, look at her straight in her eyes, (don't waver!) and tell her "i love you", and then give her a big hug.
try it, and let me know if it goes wrong.

this coming fri is my 13th anniversary with her. i thot of placing a present which i bought for her under her pilliow and when its 12midnight i call her and give her a surpise. lol -

The problem here is not about being romantic, apart from sending her the usual greetings which can be quite standard. Learn to ask her how was her day, when you see her....learn to "read" from her expressions & body language how she's feeling. Many a times, guys go on blasting about this & that...everything concerning himself & surroundings...blah blah blah.

To answer your question, I will try to undestand my woman and give in to her wants and needs if I see that is fair to both of us. If she could not take it that by all means leave. I am more then willing to find a better girl who can be fair to both of our needs instead of always giving in to hers.
No one should keep forcing someone to keep giving in to the person they love in order to feel love.
yes it is never easy & it will never be easy. But the strangest thing is when you've found the right one.....it'll be easy.
Everything you do will be in sync with hers, don't ask me why or how? I can't explain it to you.
I'm not saying that even though you've found the right one means to say that it'll be a fairytale, no it won't be but things will just work out.....it could be either you or her apologizing......it comes so naturally.
We just need to find the right match, that's all......and when you do, you will agree with what i've mentioned here.

She might be expecting a present early in the morning, and if you delay giving the present or even pretend not to have remembered throughout the day, she might be very upset and cannot wait till 12midnight (if you are talking about 12midnight 14 feb).
My suggestion is to give her a main present early in the morning 13feb, and then hide the bonus present under the pillow (according to your original plan).
She might expect the main present, but then she would be really pleasantly surprised at the bonus present under the pillow.
And you need not call her, let her discover it by herself.

This one is more general.
Deciding a gift for your gf's birthday, as u may know, is a hard thing to do.
The key thing is to listen to what she wants in trivial conversations, and remember it.
Then u can surprise her with that gift 2-12 months down the road, and she would be really surprised. "I didn't think you can remember that"
Of course it doesn't have to apply to birthdays only.. -

Communication is not about smsing or calling everyday to ask if she has eaten, to remind her to drink more water, to ask what time she wanna wake the next day.
it is talking about things that matter more... like when she has problems does she open up to u, do you open up to her?
with my recent ex, he calls me almost everyday.... he'll ask me those things i mentioned above, and sometimes we just hold on to the phone without even talking... that's NOT communication...
Do you know how most gals will talk to their best friend about everything that happens/bothers them? how they will bitch abt work, about friends, about little things that upset them...
To me, If I can't bring myself to even tell my bf these things that i can easily tell my best friend, then we are not communicating well...
My bf has to be nothing less (if not more) then my best friend. he must be able to share my problems/joy/saddness with me. -
