I think is apply to case to case... Not every case using yr logic may work. Live your life as your own, we don't owe others our lives. Be responsible to your life, and naturally you will be responsible to others.
But do remember, that the rule changes when marriage comes in. With marriage comes responsibility. There should not be any more of "I love another person more", when you have "decided this is the guy for you and took your vows to stay by his side for life"
There is of coz exception to the above as well, such as the other half betraying the other, or abusing the other. But that's life, everything is grey
