just a matter of earning more or less

The assumption here is that the stock markets will rebound after a few years.
What if it doesn't for the next 10 years?
Then how? ![]()

same thing
what if the bank you put money in collapsed?
and what if the govt decides not to guarantee the money inside it anymore?
or what if the only house you own and stay in gets burned down?
Too many what ifs. There's risk in everything you do.

if you have a house up for rental that can cover property taxes, etc, and still generate positive cash flow, then it is an asset :D
That's what I think...
if you have a house, and don't need to rent from land lord, and can sell it for decent amount...
i think it is an asset.....in terms of lose less money compared to renting.

If you buying, use only money you can afford not to use for the next 5 years. i.e. must hv holding power.
Can expect sti to reach back up to 3000 again. Economy goes in cycles
blue chips is either stocks that are very stable and will grow at a slow and steady rate,
or potato chips with blue paint on it.

I tell you my strategy
I'm that type not so on one, so I bought mostly SPH (dividend stocks). At the moment, it's down 20% from my average price, and I will be looking to average down a bit when it touches $3.
However, the upside is very low. I dun wan to be a full time trader, so I will be looking into index funds (namely the sti) after this... Lowest risk of all... or , in my personal opinion, I see almost zero risks 4 to 5 years from now... really serious...
Recent history: 2003, STI reaches 800, 2007, STI reaches 3800
So, aiming for near 1000 to buy in, and 3000+ to sell off, is to me, good enough to do so, while waiting for the next recession to come again to do a repeat.

I can't and won't and don't have the ability to tell you what is the price to buy in. For me, I'm already happy with the price I bought earlier. And if it gets lower, I average down. In addition, there are many other dividend stocks which are attractive as well.
All I can say is, anything you buy, you must use money in which you do not need for the next 5 years. As of now, I think the best, and also the most boring, strategy for people like me and you is to buy into the index funds (STI ETF), unless you are extremely good in reading financial statements (I'm not) and understanding what the company is doing, how the management is, how to calculate a stock's intrinsic value, etc etc...
Still, I would say, wait somemore... This recession will be long and deep... It's a good time to work hard outside to get more cash to buy in => that's my current plan.
Somebody told me that there is a tendency for companies to start retrenchment exercises or layoffs around the end of the year.
You think this is true?
Sucks if you get the chop just before the year end holiday season. ![]()
Where billgate and warren buffet got their money ? stock market ! stock market! stock market,!
Ha ! Li Kai Seng, is rich because he buy a house to live in !
This guy loan and loan and loan, to buy and buy land , to build and build a housing bubble for some(stupid) to buy a house to live in.
Why property ? why not stock market? ..... Cos he can really loan and loan much much more!.And he can leverage and leverage and margin and margin much much more in property.
In this bailout of the century, each and every america whether young or old , rich or poor, smart or stupid are forced to drop US40K into the market. Please throw away your books, quit your job , dash in the fight to snatch their bucks .
