Need Help In having an English Name

  Apparently i'm stuck with my chinese name for 16years and now that i've stepped into poly life, i wish to get an english name but i'm not sure how? Do i have to go through a formal procedure or i can just anyhow add in by telling others. Do i have to add it to my IC? If my IC doesn't show my english name, can i use it for later time, when during work? Pls Guide Me

  You can still tell others your english name and use it for work, for leisure etc. On verbal you can use it but on paper and filling up documents then you have to follow what is on your IC.

  Change name on IC very mafan de, don't bother to waste time and money.

  Why do the hassle? I am the only guy in my class without an English name and I find it unique

  Haha U guys r so nice, despite me being the 1st time posting. Acutally i'm not really so unhappy with my life. I'm actually quite happy with it. I'm cheerful=D
  But i just find having a english name would make it easier for communications
  Because i've once work a part time job in a office when everybody keep asking me got english name anot. So in the end they called me Ah Boy instead.
  Btw isit expensive to change into english name?

  To change on IC i think you need hire lawyer etc. You are adding a name so i not sure but my friend who just changed a letter in his name and it cost him a few hundred dollars.

  T.T I've just made my ic a couple of months ago... I heard that 30 yrs  old we need make an IC again, so can i change my name?

  U find some1 older than 30 to ask then cos i didn't know that and even if got, its more to update the photo and unsure about the name cos that is legally bonded. You want change name officially need change alot of stuff and the older you get the more mafan it becomes cos you have more and more things under your name which must all be changed.

  if u duwan ur ang moh name to appear in NRIC, den ur application forms under "Name as in NRIC" u cannot include ur ang moh name

  My friend just changed a letter in his name a few months back and he had to hire lawyer for that.

  Name change need to be legalised loh, u think u who, want change anyhow can change 1 ah

  Overview
  An Identity Card (IC) holder is required to apply for a replacement IC within 28 days of changing his/her name.
  
  Documents Required
  For Applicants via iC Online
  

  • Visa or MasterCard Credit Cards/MasterCard Debit Cards for online payment
  • One recent digital passport-sized colour photograph that meets the following specifications:
    • Image file in JPEG format ('jpg' extension) with a file size of not more than 60 kb
    • The photograph must be taken within the last 3 months
    • The photograph should be in colour, must be taken against a white background with a matt or semi-matt finish
    • The photograph image must show the full face and without headgear (headgear worn in accordance with religious or racial customs is acceptable but must not hide the facial features)
    • The photograph cannot be taken in uniform
  • Scanned copy of existing identity card (front and back) (SAF personnel holding the SAF Card is required to retrieve his/her civilian IC from CMPB-MINDEF first before submitting the application for replacement IC online) 
  • Scanned copy of registrant’s name in ethnic characters (i.e. In Chinese, Jawi or Tamil Characters)

  For Applicants at the Counter
  

  • Current Identity Card (SAF personnel holding the SAF Card is required to retrieve his/her civilian IC from CMPB-MINDEF first before calling at ICA to apply for replacement IC) 
  • One recent passport size photograph that meets the following specifications:
    • The photograph image must be taken within the last 3 months
    • The photograph should be in colour, must be taken against a white background with a matt or semi-matt finish

  • *Baptism or Religious certificate for insertion of religious name, if any
  • *Deed poll for change of name, including ethnic name, if any
  • *Marriage Certificate for insertion of married name, if any

  Procedure
  Applications via iC Online
  

  • Submit the application online at the iC Online website
  • Wait for the e-mail notification on the collection of the new IC

  OR

  • Check the status of your application at the iC Online website
  • Come in person to IC Unit, Citizen Services Centre with the required supporting documents (as stated in the collection notice) to collect the new IC

  • Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays, school holidays, eve and the day after public/school holidays
  • After 2.30 pm on weekdays
  • After 11.00 am on Saturdays and school holidays

  There is generally a larger crowd in March, end May, June, end November and December.

  eh TS, in the 1st place, u want ur ang moh name to appear in IC or not? if duwan, den dun bother to go ICA lah....dun waste the officers' time....
  if u duwan ur ang moh name to appear in NRIC, den ur application forms under "Name as in NRIC" u cannot include ur ang moh name

  This means that you have to apply to legally change your name FIRST then you go to ICA to have the new name changed to your IC. Changing names and changing it on IC is 2 different matter.

  in this case, TS wanna ADD ang moh name in IC wad...  he's bc need not have the NEW ang moh name........ anyway, my sis just added her ang moh name on IC n she say no need lawyer.

  I believe TS's english name is not even offically legalised yet. Name changes need be legalised cause your name is in government records, bank accounts etc and cannot be just change whenever you like.

  Actually, when our forefathers came to British Singapore, the brit administrators and bosses prefer to call them by their comprehension of english - romanised characters. Thus, Li became Lee, Chen became Tan or Chan. Even as I write, i am using romanised characters based on Hanyu Pinyin which was a later developement in the early 19th Century.

  In time, some of our forefathers who had the opportunity to study and got to work with brit administrators, romanised characters took root and was used for official documents, till today.

  But during that brit period, many of our forefathers were christianised, and in Christianity, when one is reborn thru the baptism, he/she takes on a new name. Rather than to change our ancient heritage and valuable sirnames, we simply adopt a 'christian name' together with our chinese name, eg:- Tan Seng Kong became Charles Tan Seng Kong, and officially recognised in the land and to everyone.

  But in our modern times, the use of christian names is one of ease, regardless if one is christian or not. I will not go into the debate on religion and hope no one else does, for it is NOT the topic of this thread.

  Rather, it is how to adopt a christian name over a legal name. If one requires it for documentation purposes, then by all means go thru the hassle of getting lawyers to legalise it.

  But if it is only for ease, just introduce yourself to anyone as 'Hi, my name is Randy Lee", or "Hi, I am Lee Seng Kong, but you can call me Randy". There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Saves you time, effort and money.

  However, if you are dealing with the authorities, best use the name on your IC, such as driving centres, HDB, PUB, etc. When dealing with companies, you can add Randy to your name, managers would prefer that ease than to call you by your full name, but make sure that when they sign your paycheck, to remove the Randy or you wont be getting your pay, as Randy doesnt appear on your IC and bank accounts.
