r u a singaporean too??Originally posted by I'm out there:no offence but this is the conclusion that i have come up with in last 30 days or so based on my recent experience with locals....i'm in singapore for quite sometime and i enjoyed the company of different people here in singapore like main land chinese, singaporean chinese, malays, indians, europeans. but today a lady in KFC pointed at me and called me "illiterate indian" .heheheheh i'm not an indian but i look like one and if i'm an illiterate then 90+% singaporeans are also illiterate considering my education (which is also from singapore).... incident was quite normal... i went to KFC to have a dinner with two other friends... we bought our meals but the girl at the counter forgot to give me spoon... i went back to counter to get one for me... and this lady in the queue shouted at me and asked me to queue up. i told her quite politely "lady i just need a spoon, i'm not going to buy something" but lady seemed unconvinced... and then girl at the counter gave me spoon and i was going back then that lady gave that remark... i was pissed off but i kept quite. it wasn't the end.. after that lady bought meal for her... she again shouted at me for not following the queue... and then i stood up and went to her and asked "lady is there any problem or did i say you something" listening that she walked away...... i don't see any problem with my behaviour not following the queue just to get a spoon from the counter as i have already bought the meal...... do you people think i was wrong. and this is usual practice in KFC and mcdonald to get the tissues, straws and remaining orders... i don't know whether she came to KFC for the first time or i was in different planet.
The second incident was in MRT. i politely asked a lady to give me the way as i wanted to get down at city hall. MRT was crowded and she was standing in the middle of the door. she refuesed to move and i was unable to get down.. i had to go to next step and the come back...the lady passed the comment "why you indians come to our place, you people don't know how to behave in MRT". again i don't see any misbehave and i was polite and i don't see any problem to ask a woman to give me way as i want to get down and she is standing in the middle.....

Sorry to hear what you've encountered. Regarding your 1st incident with the fast food restaurant, no.. It's not your fault. Though I agree with some that your topic is far too overgeneralised, it's more like a response of mine.. Like to defend my position as a Singaporean...Originally posted by I'm out there:no offence but this is the conclusion that i have come up with in last 30 days or so based on my recent experience with locals....i'm in singapore for quite sometime and i enjoyed the company of different people here in singapore like main land chinese, singaporean chinese, malays, indians, europeans. but today a lady in KFC pointed at me and called me "illiterate indian" .heheheheh i'm not an indian but i look like one and if i'm an illiterate then 90+% singaporeans are also illiterate considering my education (which is also from singapore).... incident was quite normal... i went to KFC to have a dinner with two other friends... we bought our meals but the girl at the counter forgot to give me spoon... i went back to counter to get one for me... and this lady in the queue shouted at me and asked me to queue up. i told her quite politely "lady i just need a spoon, i'm not going to buy something" but lady seemed unconvinced... and then girl at the counter gave me spoon and i was going back then that lady gave that remark... i was pissed off but i kept quite. it wasn't the end.. after that lady bought meal for her... she again shouted at me for not following the queue... and then i stood up and went to her and asked "lady is there any problem or did i say you something" listening that she walked away...... i don't see any problem with my behaviour not following the queue just to get a spoon from the counter as i have already bought the meal...... do you people think i was wrong. and this is usual practice in KFC and mcdonald to get the tissues, straws and remaining orders... i don't know whether she came to KFC for the first time or i was in different planet.

over-generalization of Singaporeans...
well, some of us are just downright rude... but thankfully they make up the majority of Singaporeans... NOT!Just ignore those people and don't let them spoil your day
Actually, if you want to talk about the top 2 racist countries in the world, they are Australia ranks #1 and Briton comes in 2nd.Originally posted by Lingos:I agree that not all of them are.
But I was reading and defending indians, caucasians and every other race on this forum. Guess what happened? Been called s|ut, caucasian lover and everything you can imagine.
I read lots of threads.. my boyfriend was indian.. or from some other race. Guess what? Everyone (especially in another forum) jumps on board and starts saying they are 'diluting', 'polluting' the chinese race. HAHAH..
My response is.. yes.. they are racists. My friend from India, whom i met in Melbourne came down to Singas with me. We were sitting in my neighbourhood coffeeshop in the morning. The aunties that walked past with their groceries in their hands stared at us. Every one of them did that. My friend asked what on earth is wrong with them. I had to shrug my shoulders and hide my embarrassment.
SK, if this is true.Originally posted by :Actually, if you want to talk about the top 2 racist countries in the world, they are Australia ranks #1 and Briton comes in 2nd.
The Aussies are widely known to hate the chinese and any other non-white race, even their own aboringal people are depised! There was a recent racist attack in Perth.
The Brits hate the Indians to the core, then come the chinese but less since they like chinese food but still look down on the chings.
In Singapore, no race calls another race names, except for the ang mo. Hardly any racist fights at all... mostly pub/club brawl... but thats a diff story. So compared to these two other countries, we are pretty harmonious.
i'm not saying that all singaporeans are racist... all the singaporean friends that i have, they are very good, always helping and i treasure them.Originally posted by Lingos:I agree that not all of them are.

Yes, been to more places in aussie than you have and I can atest that.Originally posted by Lingos:Mr SK, if this is true.
Me with my chink name and Singapore education as well as Gedanken will never get jobs.
Not even interviews. Have you been to Australia? Have you had funny looks like those that Singaporeans give me and my friend?
Neither am I! I'm not..Originally posted by I'm out there:i'm not saying that all singaporeans are racist... all the singaporean friends that i have, they are very good, always helping and i treasure them.
i totally agree with Lingos. being in a relationship with a non-chinese put a lot of pressure on chinese counterpart. actually my girlfriend is a chinese from mainland and i love her more than wildest imaginations of your. i'm here in singapore just because of her refusing all the good career opertunities in other countries, my homeland just to be with her in singapore and doing an ordinary underpaid job hardly meeting both ends. she is still studying and she'll have to serve six year MOE bond and i'm planning to arrange the money for her to pay back the grant and to take her out of singapore as soon as possible and forever... actually whenever, i go out with her people like to have a second look on us and sometime pass the remarks in chinese... initially she didn't tell me the meaning but later when i insisted she told me and now i give it a damn about this.
may be this is the reason for my reaction to incidents in MRT and KFC ... by the way that lady wasn't some old, she was in her 30's
Omg then you are the minority.Originally posted by :Yes, been to more places in aussie than you have and I can atest that.
Perth, went to casino there once. Went to margaret river as well, which is a 2hr + drive from Perth, went there for some vino and golf.
Gold Coast - usual adventure places
Sydney - maybe could add up all the times there and I could get fill a year. Was there recently to visit my friends, spent 2 weeks there, won $900 from Star City. Also driven around the outskirts of Sdyney and driven up to mel b4.
Melbourne - again could add up the number of times I have been there and it could fill 6 mths. tons of friends there as well.
Tasmania - to see that fuzzy looking animal
A few outback places....
So, what I gather is not just one place, one visit, once upon a time thing, its through countless visits, stays and from my friends experiences there, a couple of whom are PRs already and citizens as well... all had multiple encounters of racist remarks.

Yes, I do know there is a strict media censorship in Singapore. However, there has not been any racist attacks on a group of people. Unlike in Aussie and Briton, where such attacks are common.
Let me explain what's going on in these two countries.
One is.. both of them.. have a welfare system. This is supported by obviously huge taxes on the people who work here.
When they get into the country, they get the dole. They can also earn cash in hand (undeclared income) on the side. There was a documentary of a Russian or wherever he came from man who was renting out a flat that the Brit govt has given to him and making lots of money. He was driving a Merc, of course some people genuinely want to contribute to this society. But let me tell you, there's lots more who are coming for a free lunch.
Lingos, I do know the welfare system in the UK and aussie, I am an economist by training. What does welfare have to do with our topic though?
