You refuse to acknowledge that sgreans are racists as well? PLEASE QUOTE ME WHERE DID I STATE THAT SINGAPOREANS ARE NOT RACISTS.Originally posted by Lingos:Omg then you are the minority.
I haven't heard anything at all. HHAH.. My friends here are all working and part of the society. Unless they refuse to have anything to do with the aussies? C'mon SK, didn't think you were that narrow.
What is wrong? You refuse to acknowledge that sgreans are racists as well?
If they are really targeted by racial remarks, why be citizens then? Just go home.. the thing is.. i get hell from people here as well.
after reading this i think i m a racist....Originally posted by I'm out there:i'm not saying that all singaporeans are racist... all the singaporean friends that i have, they are very good, always helping and i treasure them.
i totally agree with Lingos. being in a relationship with a non-chinese put a lot of pressure on chinese counterpart. actually my girlfriend is a chinese from mainland and i love her more than wildest imaginations of your. i'm here in singapore just because of her refusing all the good career opertunities in other countries, my homeland just to be with her in singapore and doing an ordinary underpaid job hardly meeting both ends. she is still studying and she'll have to serve six year MOE bond and i'm planning to arrange the money for her to pay back the grant and to take her out of singapore as soon as possible and forever... actually whenever, i go out with her people like to have a second look on us and sometime pass the remarks in chinese... initially she didn't tell me the meaning but later when i insisted she told me and now i give it a damn about this.
may be this is the reason for my reaction to incidents in MRT and KFC ... by the way that lady wasn't some old, she was in her 30's
i don't mind la.. and neither it flamed meOriginally posted by nww16:after reading this i think i m a racist....cos i 101% disagree to interracial relationship n marriages but living as neighbour and frd no problem lahh...just my own views...not flaming u...

Well, thats nice to hear that you love your gal so much. Am sure those were rare incidents which I would'nt call racist, I would just call it rude/inconsiderate incidents though.Originally posted by I'm out there:i don't mind la.. and neither it flamed me. you are not the first one to disagree, even some of my friends don't like this idea. they have given me their views. by the way before falling for her, i was also skeptical about this "interracial thing".. but now.....
you cannot say that i fell for her because of infatuation, young emotions of teenage, because we are in mid 20's and know each other for long time. we were very close friends...
i'm not defending my stance .my friends say "i'm blinded by love and cannot see the harsh reality associated with this" may be they are right, time will tell. but no matter what, she worth more than that what i have done till now
With all due respect, sk, you've been up there for holidays - Lingos and I have worked and lived there. Yes, I've been to those parts of Australia as well, except for Perth, and I'll throw Brisbane into my list, and I haven't had any of the experiences you describe. The worst I've ever gotten was a bad vibe in Brisbane, and the rest of Australia considers that mob weird anyway.Originally posted by :Yes, been to more places in aussie than you have and I can atest that.
Perth, went to casino there once. Went to margaret river as well, which is a 2hr + drive from Perth, went there for some vino and golf.
Gold Coast - usual adventure places
Sydney - maybe could add up all the times there and I could get fill a year. Was there recently to visit my friends, spent 2 weeks there, won $900 from Star City. Also driven around the outskirts of Sdyney and driven up to mel b4.
Melbourne - again could add up the number of times I have been there and it could fill 6 mths. tons of friends there as well.
Tasmania - to see that fuzzy looking animal
A few outback places....
So, what I gather is not just one place, one visit, once upon a time thing, its through countless visits, stays and from my friends experiences there, a couple of whom are PRs already and citizens as well... all had multiple encounters of racist remarks.
Well, I have been well travelled to many places around the world. Experience shows aussies and briton, people have had the most encounters of racism.Originally posted by Gedanken:With all due respect, sk, you've been up there for holidays - Lingos and I have worked and lived there. Now, we've gone off-topic here. I agree with those that say that calling Singaporeans racist is over-generalisation. However, as Lingos has pointed out, posts on the forum demonstrate that there is a segment of the population that is openly racist. Of course, it's the same as any other country, where a bunch of deadbeats is standard equipment in the population.
I expect that we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one, sk. Like I said, what you've described doesn't gel with my experience at all, and I believe that Viper52 and the Bear would say the same thing as well.Originally posted by :Well, I have been well travelled to many places around the world. I have friends who live and work in sdyney, melbourne and perth. Even uncles working there as well. Their verdict: yes, they have experienced a good majority of racist remarks and incidents. You can remember how many people supported that racist politican? Can't remember her name now but she did garner tons of votes and was augment about being racist and how she wanted all the migrants to leave! Tons of racist attacks as well.
Yes I heard about that politician... but she was'nt well to do to start off. But she did cause quite a ruse back then. Yes we can disagree with each other but the facts are apparent on the number of racist attacks in australia and briton.Originally posted by Gedanken:I expect that we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one, sk. As for being around the world, I haven't experienced problems in either England or the US, although on arrival in England, a nice old gent at the train station did warn me to avoid Exmouth.
As for that politician, that's Pauline Hanson, who, if you haven't been keeping up with recent news, was quite happily thrown into jail by Australians. Her popularity, and that of the One Nation party, was exaggerated by the fact of her racist stance. She was never a political threat outside of Queensland, and like said earlier, the rest of Australia considers the Banana Benders a weird mob anyway.

2. Settle in other more appropriate forum.(almost the same as here, how I wish you can transfer this to the speakers corner, but leh chey to repost)
3. Settle 'outside'. (out doors beri hot leh... inside can?)
Thanks!>
Then again, Ditzy you're partially blind due to your great sacrifice, thus they tend to ptiy you more!Originally posted by ditzy:Heres more about Pauline Hanson that was rarely publicised. She used to sell fish and chips in Ipswich, Queensland before she went into politics.
She was thrown into jail as she was found guilt to have misappropriated funds during her stay in politics.
She doesn't have much support here in Queensland, its all hyped up.
I've been living in Brisbane the past year and I've never been treated as a 2nd class citizen. The locals here are much friendlier than tales i heard from Sydney and Melbourne. Though I have yet to encounter. Maybe I'm just too damn lucky.
hey hey this is flamin liao....let b rationalOriginally posted by :Then again, Ditzy you're partially blind due to your great sacrifice, thus they tend to ptiy you more!
Oh a blind ching... lets not make his day worst...

i strongly resent your comments. you might comment that these two singaporeans were downright rude. but i wouldn't think they're racist. if you were a chinese national, they'd just substitute indian for chinaman...Originally posted by I'm out there:no offence but this is the conclusion that i have come up with in last 30 days or so based on my recent experience with locals....i'm in singapore for quite sometime and i enjoyed the company of different people here in singapore like main land chinese, singaporean chinese, malays, indians, europeans. but today a lady in KFC pointed at me and called me "illiterate indian" .heheheheh i'm not an indian but i look like one and if i'm an illiterate then 90+% singaporeans are also illiterate considering my education (which is also from singapore).... incident was quite normal... i went to KFC to have a dinner with two other friends... we bought our meals but the girl at the counter forgot to give me spoon... i went back to counter to get one for me... and this lady in the queue shouted at me and asked me to queue up. i told her quite politely "lady i just need a spoon, i'm not going to buy something" but lady seemed unconvinced... and then girl at the counter gave me spoon and i was going back then that lady gave that remark... i was pissed off but i kept quite. it wasn't the end.. after that lady bought meal for her... she again shouted at me for not following the queue... and then i stood up and went to her and asked "lady is there any problem or did i say you something" listening that she walked away...... i don't see any problem with my behaviour not following the queue just to get a spoon from the counter as i have already bought the meal...... do you people think i was wrong. and this is usual practice in KFC and mcdonald to get the tissues, straws and remaining orders... i don't know whether she came to KFC for the first time or i was in different planet.
The second incident was in MRT. i politely asked a lady to give me the way as i wanted to get down at city hall. MRT was crowded and she was standing in the middle of the door. she refuesed to move and i was unable to get down.. i had to go to next step and the come back...the lady passed the comment "why you indians come to our place, you people don't know how to behave in MRT". again i don't see any misbehave and i was polite and i don't see any problem to ask a woman to give me way as i want to get down and she is standing in the middle.....
That's an interesting definition, SmallPanda. Would it necessarily be applied by those in a position of more power against those of less power?Originally posted by SmallPanda:Racism is a reflection of the comparative power of different groups of people across the world at any point in time. People's attitudes toward others are based on this, but they can and do change over time.
I'm afraid I'd have to disagree with you on a technicality there, FB. Attributing an undesirable characteristic, such as being illiterate, to one's race baselessly is in fact racism.Originally posted by Farmer Brown:i strongly resent your comments. you might comment that these two singaporeans were downright rude. but i wouldn't think they're racist. if you were a chinese national, they'd just substitute indian for chinaman...
