For a good friend ESPECIALLY a GUY... Cutting it STRAIGHT in is usually good...
Your approach is ok. But probably there're some misunderstandings there or something? Advice would be to allow some time for things to settle and perhaps your friend's mind to clear too?
Try to keep your relationship with him at least luke warm if you can? ie. if he talks but avoid the topic, then just talk about other things...
Of course, you can also try Yun's advice and investigate into matters... Though generally feasible, can sometimes lead to adverse effects... Well... Almost all methods used would have some of its pros and cons?
